Obie Trice Says Eminem Rewrote Lyrics On Some Of Their Collaborations

One of the first artists to sign to Eminem’s Shady Records was Detroit rapper Obie Trice. The Well-Known Asshole’s debut, Cheers, garnered a platinum plaque, while its follow-up, Second Round’s On Me, went Gold.

In a recent interview on Vlad TV, Obie discussed what it was like being in the Shady Records camp. “It was definitely an experience,” said Obie. “The good and the bad, man. It was a hell of a time of my life. Platinum records, platinum-plus records, sold a lot of records out here.”

Obie discussed his relationship with Eminem, past and present. “We was cool. We still brothers today. My daughter would play with his daughter. We was a good team. We kept it one hundred with each other. It was a great look, great time. And even with the whole camp: Proof, rest in peace, he was a good dude as well. But all of those cats, pretty much, was. 50, the whole G-Unit. We just got in there and worked, and got it done.”

During his time on Shady Records, Eminem and Obie collaborated on the 8 Mile soundtrack, Eminem’s The Eminem Show and Encore, and Obie’s two aforementioned releases, as well as D12’s D12 World. Trice revealed that during some of these collaborations, Em took more than one crack at his verses. “What I looked at was, sometimes dude would change his lyrics after hearing my verse. Yeah, he would go rewrite his music. I wouldn’t say it’s a no-no,  because we’re trying to make a hot record. If he didn’t feel like that was what he wanted to put out there, he would change it. And I would do the same. It wasn’t like we was in competition”

Obie continued, “I’ma do me in a way that I’m trying to body the song, not body the individual. That was my camp. That’s my people. It wasn’t like that. We was just making songs that he felt that his lyrics weren’t what he wanted to put on there, and he changed it after he heard my lyrics, like, ‘Oh shit, I need to do this differently.’ That happened before. A few times, actually.”
