Black Hippy Covers XXL’s October/November Issue

Black Hippy and Top Dawg Entertainment members Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock appear on the cover of XXL’s October/November issue. The cover photograph was shot by acclaimed photographer Jonathan Mannion, who has photographed album covers for DMX and Jay Z, among others.

The issue, which names TDE “Rap’s Illest Crew,” is set to include a tenth anniversary piece regarding OutKast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. The magazine’s article is also set to feature Andre 3000 and Big Boi discussing the fifteenth anniversary of their critically acclaimed album Aquemini, which was released in September 1998.

Big Sean, Chance the Rapper and Yo Gotti also appear in the October/November issue.

TDE added new members to its roster this year. Singer SZA was added to the imprint in August

“To be the first female on TDE is more…it’s really just more important to me to be a part of TDE, rather than the first female,” SZA said in a September interview with MTV. “They’ve worked with girls in the past, incredible [artists] like Alori [Joh] and Jhene [Aiko]. So for me, it’s just honestly being a part of a collective, such as TDE. That’s what’s more insane to me. They don’t treat me like the girl, in the best ways though. No one tries to baby me or walk over me ’cause I’m a girl. They just let me fight for what I believe in and let me be as creative as I want to be and just give me free reign. So I love that.”

TDE also added Isaiah Rashad, a Chattanooga, Tennessee rapper, to the roster in September.

TDE appeared in the BET Hip Hop Awards cypher, which aired yesterday (October 15). The cypher has been in the headlines because Kendrick Lamar appears to diss Drake in his verse. The cypher can be viewed below via MWP, followed by the XXL cover.

    1. jay rock reminds me of someone, he looks like a cross between Shaq and someone i cant quite put my finger on

    2. TDE taking over everything… the new Death Row. West Coast is back, NY is dead, and the South needs to fall back for a minute.

      1. Slow down there!!!! The New Death Row? I’m from the West(310) but they only put out one classic(Good Kid,Mad City) so far. Death Row had Snoop, Pac, Dogg Pound, Rage, Dre,Quick, etc. They was putting out classics, soundtracks, movies. All Eyez, Chronic,Dogg Food, Above The Rim Soundtrack, Grid Locked soundtrack,Doggystyle, etc. TDE got a long way to go to be called the new Death Row. There will only be one Death Row records.

      2. Nah TDE put out : Section 80, Habits and Consequences, Control System, and GKMC. All classics except Schoolboy Q’s. Now the sales numbers aren’t there yet but it will come. Best label/crew in the game.

      3. 80% of artist on death row in the early ninetys was very well known even outside of hip hop. the only artist on tde that is known outside of hiphop is kendrick. so stfu and let tde work hard and be their own crew. dont try act like they the new death row cuz there will never be another death row. yungin.

      4. 2 harlem cats trying to sound like southern rappers and a ghostface impersonator ….LOL exactly! NY IS DEAD

      5. Ferg and Rocky dont sound like southern rappers at all! They have that Harlem flow. But whats so bad about sounding like ur from the south? Ferg and Rocky grew up listening to southern rap.

    3. “Kendrick Lamar and Black Hippy”? They’re ALL in the same group.

I hate how they have to put them down like Eminem and D-12. Black Hippy is the entire thing and none of them would be where they are if it werent for each others contributions. The #KendricksVerse during the cypher was incredibly rude too.

    4. before I saw the receipt of $9041, I have faith …that…my friends brother was like actualy taking home money parttime at there labtop.. there neighbour had bean doing this 4 only nineteen months and resantly cleared the mortgage on their house and got a new Ford Focus. you can find out more

      1. Dr. Dre built a time machine! That what hes been working on instead of putting out Detox.. Once Beats blew up he finally had the funds to complete his vision. Dr. Dre is a modern day mad scientist!

He let Kendrick and the rest of TDE use his time machine before the photoshoot so they could go back and soak in the culture and forgotten styles from when they were too young to remember.
