Hill’s tour plans come shortly after the release of her latest song, titled “Consumerism,” which addresses corporate greed, racism and imperialism. The song was reportedly finished through a series of phone calls Hill made during her incarceration.
Upon her sentencing to prison, Lauryn Hill cited threats to her family as the reason for missing tax payments in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Throughout the legal process, Hill posted incendiary Tumblr posts, first to address her financial woes, and later criticizing the IRS and touching on racism in the United States.
Laruyn Hill rose to fame as part of the multiplatinum-selling group The Fugees and received critical acclaim for her 1998 debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Miseducation earned Hill five Grammy Awards, including the Album of the Year award.
