This week, the Slept-On But Dope selections include a diverse array of acts. Snow Tha Product’s Ty Dolla $ign-assisted “Don’t Judge Me” gets a nod. Project Pat and Juicy J implore the listener to “Be A G,” and CJ Fly enlists Ab-Soul for “Sadderdaze.”

Snow Tha Product f. Ty Dolla $ign – “Don’t Judge Me”

I usually feel a way about anyone sampling tracks that I perceive to be Hip Hop classics. However, Snow Tha Product really does TLC’s “Creep” justice on her latest “Don’t Judge Me.” Snow flips bars like she’s doing it for the late Left Eye, delivering a real Summertime feel, which makes sense if you’re currently on the East Coast currently getting beat up by global warming. Ty Dolla $ign brings a hook that’s reminiscent of a ’90s R&B track, and for a moment you forget what decade it is – in a good way. It’s been a long time coming for Snow Tha Product to get her shine, and it’s good to see that people are finally recognizing her solid talent. Left Eye would be proud. – Kathy Iandoli (@kath3000)

Project Pat f. Juicy J – “Be A G”

Project Pat is the rare rapper who adds a healthy dose of sobering reality to his brutal brand of Gangster Rap. On this tag-team cut with his brother Juicy J, Project Pat details his past as a robber and drug dealer, and also trumpets his non-snitching ways, all of which he says separate him from the unnamed targets of “Be A G.” The masterfully macabre manifesto also includes ample examples of the depraved hilarity that is the hallmark of the best work of both Project Pat and Juicy J. The thunderous beat courtesy of Mike WiLL Made It sounds like an updated version of a vintage Three 6 Mafia soundbed with its obese bassline and the relentless “Mafia” chants that accent the track. Rap started in the streets. Project Pat and Juicy J’s bone-crushing “Be A G” shows why it remains there. – Soren Baker (@SorenBaker)

CJ Fly f. Ab-Soul – “Sadderdaze”

“Nothing but jewels,” CJ Fly says to open “Sadderdaze,” a selection off his new mixtape, Thee Way Eye See It. Jewels get dropped throughout his new project and this is a definite standout. The song is a bit of a throwback, yes, but it’s also an intriguing look at two of today’s bright talents. Ab-Soul, who has garnered greater notoriety than Fly as another gem from the TDE tree, blesses the cut with a thought provoking verse. “Heaven knows that we livin’ in hell,” Ab-Soul says. “But I cherish every day that we live and inhale / The toxins of this boxed-in earth I dwell.” “Sadderdaze” is yet another example of Ab-Soul’s skills, but it may ring more beneficial for CJ Fly. The selection may just bring more eyes to his new project, Thee Way Eye See It, which also features Buckshot and A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg. The Pro Era emcee may be flying under some radars, but “Sadderdaze” is sure to make more aware of CJ Fly’s abilities. – Andres Tardio (@AndresWrites)
