As he prepares to release Oxymoron, ScHoolboy Q says he is the most self assured he’s ever been.

“I never felt this confident in my music or this confident period,” ScHoolboy Q said in an interview with AlLinstrom. “I just think I’m the best rapper right now.”

ScHoolboy Q’s fellow Black Hippy member, Kendrick Lamar, recently made similar statements on his much-discussed verse for “Control.” Lamar’s critically acclaimed platinum-sellinggood kid, m.A.A.d. city was the first album out of the Top Dawg Ent. camp following the label’s Interscope connection. Q discussed the pressure that lies with following in Kendrick Lamar’s footsteps.

“There’s a little bit of pressure, but I’m not Kendrick and he’s not me,” Q said. “You can’t expect my album to sound exactly like his, but it’s gonna compete with his album…I know the album is good and I just want people to receive it in a good way. But the pressure, of course it’s there, a little bit. That’s fuckin’ Kendrick Lamar. When you say his name now, it’s a fuckin’ big deal…He’s up there with [Kanye West] and all that.”

Aside from the pressure that Q’s hoping to shake with the release of Oxymoron, the TDE rapper also said he hopes to quit using marijuana soon.

“I’m actually trying to quit smoking weed,” Q said. “It’s a little selfish in a sense because I got homies that’s broke. I got my momma. As much money as I done spent [on marijuana], I could have bought my momma a new place, a new car. I spend like $6,000 a month on weed. It’s like an ounce every other day. It’s not even just me just smoking by myself, you gotta understand. I’m around a lot of people and I’m the type of person, I know how much people make. You don’t have to spend your money when you’re with me. It’s not like that. I’m not selfish or nothin’ like that. I’m always supplying all the weed all the time and drinks or I’ll pay for the food. The thing is, I make a lot more money than them. One hundred dollars is a lot of money for some people.”

While the rapper has not stopped smoking weed yet, he did acknowledge that it will alter his life if he does.

“I haven’t tried not smoking weed and rapped yet,” Q said. “I said I want to quit…[Weed] mellows you. Once you get used to being mellow and chill, once you don’t smoke, you’re a normal person so your senses is regular. You not the sluggish, chill person that’s cool that’s down for whatever. Regular, you’re almost like a kid again, in that sense.”
