With a debut album set for release tomorrow (August 20), A$AP Mob emcee A$AP Ferg recently chopped it up with GQ magazine to share some last minute insight into his Trap Lord debut.

According to Ferg, rather than stick to the formulaic, party songs that have increased in popularity, he opted for records that aren’t dumbed down. And as a result, the “Shabba” rapper crafted an album he says could easily serve as the soundtrack to a runway show or even the score to a movie.

“No, this is just about to be a great time for hip-hop, I think,” said Ferg when asked if there were any other album details that needed to be shared. “A lot of the fun was taken away when people started dumbing down music and making only party songs, but I feel like my album has a lot more to offer. You can walk the runway to this music, you can use it as movie scores, you can clean your house to it, you can even play video games to it. I think it’s going to inspire a lot of young kids to not be scared and just do what they really want to do.”

Although a majority of the songs featured on Trap Lord are solo cuts, Ferg did save room for the occasional feature and among the artists featured on the album are French Montana, ScHoolboy Q, and Waka Flocka Flame.

During his interview with GQ, Ferg spoke briefly on his collab with Waka, titled “Murda Something,” and commented on the pair’s ability to aid one another musically.

“That was so dope,” he revealed. “Me and Waka, we really cool; we fam. We linked up in Miami to write, and the first day I was there with Jim Johnson and we didn’t really come up with anything. The second day is when I saw Waka, and the chemistry of us being homies, we just said ‘We’re here, we might as well do a track together.’ I never knew he was so into his work—he sits down with the engineer and he tells them what effects to do, what traps to make… He was telling me, ‘Yo, Ferg, I think you could do this better,’ and I would tell him, ‘Yo, Waka, I think you should put this effect on your voice.’ We were totally involved, and it was all good.”

With the hype surrounding Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse still very much present, the interview didn’t conclude without the A$AP spitter sharing his thoughts on Kendrick’s latest lyrical offering.

When asked to provide his response to Kendrick’s “king of New York” mention, Ferg merely presented this question, “What’s a king to a lord?”
