J. Cole’s sophomore album Born Sinner was released just a week ago and already the North Carolina emcee has plans to re-release two of his mixtapes commercially. While speaking with Houston’s 97.9 The Box, Cole informed fans that he would soon make The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights available for purchase.
“The classics that I had, I didn’t get a chance to like, have those be commercially sold…that was the only part that was missing,” said the rapper, according to MTV News. “So that’s my goal. Now that this album is doing well, my next plan is to release those commercially.”
The Dreamville emcee later revealed that more than anything his primary concern is giving both of the well-received mixtapes the recognition “they deserve.”
“I don’t care if they sell a thousand copies. It’s just to get them the proper [recognition] that they deserve,” Cole shared.
Released in 2009, The Warm Up serves as Cole’s second official mixtape and features “Lights Please,” a record that went on to garner the attention of Roc Nation founder Jay-Z. Friday Night Lights hit the mixtape market the following year and boasted appearances from Drake, Wale, and more.
Canadian crooner The Weeknd pulled a similar move last year when he released a mixtape trilogy in the form of an album and made the project available for purchase.

friday night lights his best project
I COMPLETELY agree. Its his best compilation of music to date. Its classic Cole. Born sinner comes close but FNL is legendary.
Friday Night Lights is amazing. But The Warm Up is where it started… The Come Up was just a sign of things to come.
BUT, I agree, Friday Night Lights is his best work to date.
J Cole knows his album bombed and had to but at least 200k of it. He needed money quick and so choose to put the mixtapes out.
Your bum the album did 300,000 and he did dollar shows kill yourself
He bought 200k copies himself. The remaining 100k copies, most of its profits went to Jay Z. At YMCMB, artists keep 90% of their profits.
Dube quit smoking crack LOL seriously u are retarded like j.COLE said in his power trip single ass stupid how u get to college college please mmmm k j.cole only bought like 50 – 60 copies of his album 297,000 his first week from his second album WOW this FLOP WAS AN EPIC FAIL THAT’S WHY J.COLE MAKING MONEY THIS TIME SMART OF HIM TO PUT OUT HIS MIXTAPES IN STORES AND MAKE MONEY OFF THEM WHILE HE MAKING OFF THE SOPHOMORE ALBUM U WANNA TALK ABOUT FLOPS HOW ABOUT IM NOT A HUMAN BEING 2 ONLY 217,000 FIRST WEEK AND NOT EVEN GOLD AFTER 3 MONTHS LIL WAYNE LOST 450,000 FANS ON I’M NOT A HUMAN BEING 2 LIL WAYNE HURTIN FOR CASH IN 2013 while J.COLE having HIS BEST SUMMER YET LOL U NONBELIEVERS ARE ALL FOOLS TO THINK J.COLE WOULD BE A FORGOTTEN MEMORY AFTER TWO YEARS LOL HE’S BACK AND HIS SOPHOMORE AFFORD PAY OFF SO SET BACK AND CONTINUE HATING AND WATCH AS BORN SINNER GOES GOLD AND SELLS OVER 700,000 COPIES IN THE FEW MONTHS TO COME LOL VICTORY ROC NATION SHITS ON ALL OF YMCMB AND CASH MONEY COMBINED HOW U FEEL ABOUT THAT AWWWWW DOES IT MAKE U BUTT HURT
All I’ve read was delusional bullshit. J Cole admitted to me that he bought 200k copies by himself.
dentaldamboy, just stop that shit please.. you don’t know any of these people.. why the hell would j cole come to you to say he bought 200k copies.. like the other poster said, he only bought 50-60 copies on that video.. well, drake was the one that actually bought them for him, so that’s a loss on your part..
J Cole sated that he ordered copies from walmart and target.
Come on dentaldamboy, it’s like you’re not even trying to be subtle anymore.
Black dick all up in dentaldamboy again.

What a desperate move for cash this is, the only logical reason for dropping these mixtapes is that born sinner flopped and Jay is ready to release him.
Flop ?? look at the sales man !
But i agree with U, dropping these tapes noww is just for cash !
Born Sinner did flop. J Cole bought at least 200k copies himself and another 35k copies went to drake.
I doubt hes worried about a buck man. He wants people to forget about his first CD and view him off his more lyrical shit.
Bobyahead and dentalbitch are fucking idiots making up lies. Born Sinner did not flop. It sold 297k and he only purchased 60 copies to give to fans.
I will show my respect and purchase Friday Night Lights. It is one of the best mixtapes I have ever heard in my life and that is no exaggeration.
wale gonna be no. 1 next week. Rick Rawse is a true bawse and gangster.

It better be cheap Cole. FNL is one of my favorite mixtapes of all time but dont go and destroy something by putting dollar signs on it. The best things in life are free and we can all agree that mixtapes are always better than the CDs anyway.
you guys are so stupid! born sinner did not flop in anyway. Both yeezus and born sinner will go gold. He’s dropping the mixtapes because people never got a chance to really hear his material he had on those songs. If it was about money for jcole then j cole would be making a bunch of songs for the radio which he is not. His whole born sinner album is nothing like drake or lil waynes bullshit. It’s down to earth real music.
While Im skeptical about The Warm Up being a commercial record, I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A HARD COPY OF FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.
It’s still his best work and definitely one of the most influential albums in my love for hiphop
