Meek Mill stands as Philadelphia’s current Rap king. During a recent interview with New York radio station Hot 97, the Maybach Music Group artist discussed his favorite rapper from the City of Brotherly Love. “Beanie Sigel, I’d say,” Meek Meek says. “That’s the time I fell in love with Rap. Around that time Beanie Sigel first got on.”
Meek Mill says he was particularly fond of “The Best Of Beanie,” a 2006 mixtape put out by Cosmic Kev and Strictly Skillz Magazine. The 31 cut collection featured Sigel collaborations with Jay-Z, The Roots, Major Figgas and Memphis Bleek, among others. “That was the most fire mixtape in the city,” Meek Mill says. “I was a little kid. I heard my sister playin’ that and I learned the words to it. I used to spit some of the raps like they was mine in school and everything.”
When Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg asked Meek Mill about Chill Moody, Meek Mill was effusive in his praise of the emerging Philly artist. “Chill Moody, he’s fire,” Meek Mill says. “He’s got a big buzz out here. He’s sellin’ out shows, everything out here. He next up.”
Philadelphia’s Rap roots run deep. In the mid-1980s, Schoolly D became the first gangster rapper and the first rapper to own his own record label, Schoolly-D Records. His 1985 “P.S.K. ‘What Does It Mean” single was reworked by The Notorious B.I.G. on “B.I.G. Interlude” and has been sampled by DJ Premier, Nice & Smooth and Case, among others. D.J. Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince emerged as a comedic, story-driven duo with such singles as “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble” and “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” The Fresh Prince later went by his given name, Will Smith, and has emerged as one of the most accomplished actors in the world.
Steady B made his mark in the mid-1980s by dissing LL Cool J with “Take Your Radio,” working with KRS-One and launching the Hilltop Hustlers collective of artists, which also included Cool C and Three Times Dope. The Roots and Bahamadia were among the next wave of Philadelphia artists who set the stage for Beanie Sigel, Freeway and others.

meek mill and his label mates at MMG made me HATE rap
they take up less than 1% of rap and yet they alone made you hate rap? sigh… i swear kids shouldnt be allowed to have unsupervised internet access
it was a joke
wasnt a good one
No it wasn’t. Stop lying.
LOL 3 artist made you hate an entire genre. That’s a lot of power you gave them. Just don’t listen
MMG > G Unit. Numbers don’t lie. Both Self Made volumes sold 5 million copies worldwide. In Mexico, Trilla is the most bootlegged album ever.
neither of those albums has even sold 1 million worldwide
Crazy seeing how he came from nothing to where he’s at now. Been rocking with him for 6-7 years now. Progession and dedication can get you where you want to be always remember that. Y’all can talk as negative as you want but this a kid that came from the bottom worse hoods than prolly everybody typing hate online, and made it. For that I gotta show respect
remember when cassidy bodied him a few months ago? i know meek will never forget that burn
I really don’t think anybody remembers that lol. Especially in Philly Cass BEEN gone
he prolly believes that he won that. No one actually feels a loss until they see their numbers drop ie Ja Rule. If you beef and you still gettin the same amount of money and your numbers dont drop, then youre still good, by todays standards
mmg be gone in 5 years
That’s five more years than G Unit has.
but they havent accomplished 10% of what G-Unit did
Dont matter what he ever does. He still backed down to cassidy. Blemish on his legacy
Back down? He challenged Cassidy who mysteriously vanished.
Meek Mill made his fans deaf
americans are corny and suck dick
Will fuck your country up
LOL that’s like the most random nigga ever
Worldwide sales for Self Made 1 & 2 are 10 million total. Digitally, they’ve sold 3 million. Curtis can’t believe it. While he’s waiting for Jimmy to let Street Slop Mortician come out Rozay and company are selling millions with their timeless anthems about street life and complicated drug deals.
lol, you don’t have to lie, just say you don’t like 50 Cent. Weirdo.
selling millions lol, if that was the case they would have platinum records
wtf he was 19 when he started rappin, wtf joey badass is just 18 is way better than meek mill
Who cares when they started rapping, lmao. A niggas age doesn’t dictate the quality of their music.
pretty sure meek started rapping way before 19
who gives a fuck about Weak Mill and his stupid azz voice anymore
Why do you care what his voice sounds like?
ITS MMG FOH LIFE. MILL THE SECOND COMING!! ROSS BE THE BAWSE A THAT MMG CLICK!! WALE COMING SOON!!! ITS THE TAKE OVER 4 YALL BITCHES…NO NEW FRIENDS CAUSE DOUBLE M GOT THAT WORK!!! FUCK YOUR FAVORITE RAPPER OR GROUP!!!!
Nobody likes 50 Cent.
But that’s OK
Cause I don’t like y’all anyway
And I don’t like y’all anyway
Fuck all y’all!
50 got more haters than meek mill has fans lol
J. Cole and Schoolboy Q both like him enough to put him on their new albums
Cassidy put this nigga in a coffin…
The Best of Beanie came out in 1998…come on HHDX! The Roc was damn near over by 2006! Poor journalism yall!
It was released on datpiff in 2006
“50 got more haters than meek mill has fans lol”
So what your saying is you’d prefer millions of people to hate you than say maybe a few thousand who like and support your music? Mind blowing logic there.
you cant be an international superstar without haters so yes i would definitely be 50 cent any day over meek mill. millions might hate him but millions love him all over the world too.
and dont get it twisted meek has a lot of haters too.
i saw a weeks worth of albums sales a few weeks ago and believe it or not 50 Cent first album is still selling more each week than both Rick Ross and Meek Mills last albums.
Sure it is.
swear to god Get Rich Or Die Trying is still selling more than Dream and Nightmares and God Forgives I Don’t
“you cant be an international superstar without haters so yes i would definitely be 50 cent any day over meek mill”
50 Cent an international superstar? lol I’ll give you a chance to retract that silly statement. It’s not even the fact people hate 50, but the fact his own label and boss, good ole Jimmy Lovine, hates Curtis so much he won’t just release the poor guy’s last album so he can finally just go away. At least Meek knows his songs are going to reach the marketplace.
reach the marketplace but no one will buy them
oprah and larry king dont interview “rappers”. hes most def an “international superstar”. even your grandma knows him
“reach the marketplace but no one will buy them”
Keep telling yourself that junior. In the meantime wait for Amazon to give you a release date on Street King Immortal.
No Cassidy dead here in Philly! Meek Mill all day!
Meek Mill started when he was like 10!
