Between 1979 and 2009, songstress Teena Marie recorded hits such as “Square Biz,” “Lovergirl” and “Oh La La La.” Later signed to Cash Money Records, the Rick James protege died in late 2010, reportedly of natural causes. In an unusual turn of events, it’s now been revealed that much of Teena’s studio equipment is currently being used by Odd Future’s Syd Tha Kyd.
In a new interview with Brooklyn Martino, Syd revealed the connection, when discussing her evolution from bedroom studio to professional space. “I have a studio [in Hollywood, California] on Highland and Sunset [Boulevard], with my friend Alia Rose. We just kinda opened it together and are tryng to get some work done in there, really,” said the emcee/producer. Throughout the years Rose has performed under the name of Rose LeBeau. Syd clarified, “Her mom was Teena Marie, and so inside the studio, you’ll see all kinds of Teena Marie plaques, Rick James plaques, and most of the equipment in there is her’s too.”
Throughout her three-decade career, Teena Marie also worked extensively with Kurupt and the rapper’s then-wife Gail Gotti on her Saphire album. Marie also collaborated with Snoop Lion (as Snoop Doggy Dogg) and Eve.
Syd Tha Kid and partner Matt Martians, are working on The Internet’s sophomore album, Feel Good Music planned for later this year.
