Emmett Till Family Spokesperson Says Lil Wayne’s Apology “Falls Short”

Yesterday morning (May 1), a letter was published—believed to be authored by Lil Wayne, apologizing to the family of Civil Rights figure Emmett Till for his lyrics. On Future’s “Karate Chop (Remix),” Wayne rapped that he “beat the pussy up like Emmett Till,” referring to the 1955 beating and subsequent murder of a Mississippi teenager for allegedly flirting with a White woman.

Hours after the public letter published, a spokesperson for the Till family and Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation said that it was not much of an apology at all.

Airickca Gordon-Taylor, Executive Director of the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation and Till’s cousin told TMZ.com, “While it’s commendable that he has vowed to respect the legacy of Emmett Till and his memory to ‘not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in his music,’ this statement falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned.” Previously, Taylor had spoken out against Wayne, criticizing his racial “pride and dignity,” regarding the insensitivity of the lyrics.

Lil Wayne drove headlines yesterday, as TMZ also reported that he was released from Los Angeles, California’s Cedars Sinai Medical Center. The Cash Money Records superstar was also reported to be engaged, based on his comments made in an MTV reality, “The Show With Vinny,” trailer.

    1. Emmitt Till’s family aint nothing but a bunch of crabs. Let Lil Wayne live. He apologized already. You crabs!

      1. I agree. I fully disagree with what Wayne said and that he should be held accountable for it, but they request an apology and when he does they say it isn’t enough? Okay, we see what’s going on here.

      2. I get what you’re saying but my dude he acknowledged the fact that he was wrong, said he would pull back the song, which is what the family originally requested, said he won’t perform the song or even sell it and have another version of the song out there and also acknowledged their pain and struggle..i mean if that isn’t an apology in a sense then i don’t know what is. I mean the fact that he literally didn’t say “i’m sorry”? C’mon man. Like i said Wayne was wrong and i respect the family but after this they just scratching for nothing.

      3. “said he would pull back the song, which is what the family originally requested”

I thought they originally requested a public apology which has not happened yet

    2. He took too long to apologize. Y’all should checkout thegrandreport, they be having some good stuff too

      1. no dumbass because he took 3 months to put out a statement obviously written by someone else and it didnt even say sorry for what he said, just a bunch of bullshit

      2. Naw…u dumbo…they want that check…do your research ITS NOT HIS FIRST EMMETT TILL LINE…

    4. id like to see how some of you fuck niggas would feel had your family member been beaten brutally and murdered and someone said some slick shit bout him or her in a song

      1. They family aint do shit to the white folks but they want to try and get into another black man’s pockets. So that makes them crabs in the bucket. Black on Black crime. Fuck them niggas!

      2. What white folks? Are they supposed to go after every white person because of what a few of them did?

    5. “Beating up ya block yeah I get my Emmett Till on” – It’s me B*tches Freestyle, Drought 3, Lil Wayne
That was the biggest mixtape of 2007, and nobody cared about it for years. Now a leak come out and the whole black community wanting an apology? GTFOH

    6. YOU MAY HATE WAYNE NOW, BUT WHEN HE DIES, YOU”LL ALL BE PRAISING HIM JUST LIKE ME!! NO ONE LIKED 2PAC OR BIGGIE BUT WHEN THEY DIED, THEY STARTED KISSING THEIR ASSES!!

      1. Everything you say is bullshit. Niggas loved Pac and Biggie when they were alive, so to compare them to Wayne is blasphemous. Wayne is a shitty artist who hasn’t contributed one good thing to hip-hop. If he dies, that’ll be the greatest day ever and everyone will be cheering like Bin Laden is dead.

      2. shut the fuck up people loved pac and big there fans mourned when they died and evan when pac was in hospital hes fans waited patiently outside 2 see if he was alive dont compare the legends to the ignorant u bitch wayne will never be on pacs level hes a sell out ignorant bitch and i aint got one bit of respect 4 him period if he died i would be pissed by the fact people would be putting him up on website like this praising him the hip hop community on the otherhand would not care no true hip hop fan would respect wayne thats y u have no power on this site u think u know what hip hop is because of wayne wen in truth u know fuck all ur jus a bitch little teen who is blinded by waynes ignorance probably the type to fly flags and skateboard jus cos wayne does it fuck wayne fuck young money and fuk you yessir u suck dick nothing but a little troll motherfucka talking like u r the voice of hip hop when ur jus a little gremlin ass kid gobbling on dick 4 a pack off 20 cigs respect 2 the till family history was unkind 2 your family but the world understands your pain and unlike wayne feels 4 you.

    7. Man, now Till family just lookin desperate. Wayne apologized, shit is done. over. finished. drop it .

      1. They want to SEE Wayne apologizing, not a lawyer’s press statement. Don’t blame them for your stupidity.

    8. I’m heading up to Macy’s (I’m gonna leave here in a minute.I’m going to walk into the dressing, and proceed to wipe my ass with some Trukfit.I’m gonna go this everyday until I get a real apology and I suggest y’all do the same

      1. please…that was sufficient. theyre being sensitive. he didnt say the words “i am sorry” because he’s lil wayne. he did do everything they asked, implied that it was wrong by taking it out and supporting epic, and told them that he has the utmost respect for the family. i understand lil wayne beef can keep his name in the public eye, but now you move on to other ways of legacy preservation.

    9. He didn’t apologize but you gotta move on. There’s bigger racial issues than a rap lyric. You can’t be butthurt about every apology you don’t get.

    10. They Till family ain’t do shit to the white folks but they want to try and get into another black man’s pockets. So that makes them crabs in the bucket. Black on Black crime. Fuck them niggas!

      1. They aren’t asking for money anywhere just that the little bridge-troll poseur show some respect. You’re just another ignorant ratchet bitch

    11. “He didnt apologize though. Read the statement again”

A grown man can’t be forced to apologize. What world do you live in where when someone demands you do or say something, and you jump right away and do it? Wayne doesn’t owe these people a thing. He made a dumb reference. So what. Get a life or stop listening to rap music, cause if you go back and look at hundreds of other songs, you’ll find lines that nobody cared about which were much worse.

    12. i like wayne’s music but lets face it the guy has no sense of black pride. he’s segregates and deams black women more than anyone by praising light skin black women usually at the expense of dark skinned women. that alone should tell you the guy has no sense of history and should not represent black people. I wasnt surprised by this lyric, all the guy cares about is light skinned women and skating

      1. Are you kidding me? Light Skinned women are BLACK WOMEN. First of all, I am sick and tired of this light and dark issue. Just stop it. Lil wayne is a lost cause, end of story.

    13. People of TRUE FAITH have to realize that even when offended by a fellow man, an apology is never required in order to grant forgiveness. Forgiveness is not for the person that did the offending… Forgiveness is for the person (or persons) that were offended. At this point, I have to feel like it is only about financial gain for the Till Family. Although it was extremely wrong for Wayne use the lyrics he did, regardless of if he gave a “proper apology”, or even if he didn’t give one at all, in order for them to be free of the pain it caused, as TRUE CHILDREN OF GOD, they HAVE to forgive him. Anything less than that at this point, is purely ploy… #MyOpinion…

      1. they already put out a statement after his last seizure incident wishing him the best and hoping for his good health

      2. So, why are they still replying then? If you forgive someone, there’s no need to talk about it any longer.

    14. Wayne changed the line to I run up the middle like Emmit Smith, and now his family is outraged and demanding an apology. The GOAT just can’t win.
