Last night (February 10) at the 2013 Grammy Awards, Christian Hip Hop artist Lecrae made history by being the first rapper to grab a the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album for his 2012 effort, Gravity. The September 2012 release, which debuted in the Top 3 overall charts, beat contenders from Gospel artists such as Marvin Sapp and Anita Wilson.
“This past year has been an amazing experience and to see that my music is opening doors for the Hip Hop culture is incredible. All I want to do is make great honest music for all my fans to enjoy,” said Lecrae in a statement. “I want to build opportunities for other artists like myself as well as show that there is always a place for being unashamed and authentic.”
Released on Reach Records, Gravity features The Clipse’s No Malice. The album sold over 73,000 units in its first week.
Good for him. That track, MayDay with Krit was dope.
pretty sure the dude has sold way more than 73,000 of that album.
i think even DMX couldnt win any in that category? that is some achievement
Props to Lecrae.
Thats awesome for him! First rapper from HTown to win a grammy since Chamillionaire I think (did UGK Get nominated or win anything in 2007?).. and he is also a fantastic spitter and is one of the few role models to follow in hip hop.
UGK from PA, sharpen ya knowledge kid
^^ Tho Bun B lives in Houston, and he claims the H more than PA
He sold 70k the first week. Not to date.
Just heard lacrae for the first time, dope, grammy well deserved!
fuck jesus
congrats but, shits corny..good for him though… I like how he doesn’t wear diamond encrusted chains while rapping about a guy who preached against being rich… A lot of contradictions between christianity and the hip hop community.
