DJ Premier, Cassidy Name The Hottest Artists Of 2012

Even though 2012 has come to a close, that isn’t stopping many publications from reminiscing about the biggest and best artists of the year. Now, in a recent interview with VladTV, the likes of DJ Premier, Cassidy and others name their favorite acts of 2012.

VladTV reached out to a host of Hip Hop figures to discuss the biggest breakthrough acts of 2012. Legendary Gang Starr producer DJ Premier named Flatbush up-and-comer Joey Bada$$ as his favorite new act of last year, comparing his rebellious attitude to that of N.W.A. and Public Enemy.

“I like Joey Bada$$,” Premo said. “I like rebel attitudes because I was really a hardcore Public Enemy, N.W.A., middle fingers up type of dude.”

Philadelphia veteran Cassidy also weighed in on the top act of 2012. Surprisingly, however, Cassidy’s choice for the artist of the year is his current foe Meek Mill, adding that Meek’s ascent to worldwide stardom from the local Philadelphia scene is deserving of recognition and praise.

“The best rapper this year, other than myself, I have to pick Meek Mill,” he said. “He’s from Philly, my city. He’s done it big. I remember bringing up Meek Mill’s name ‘cus he had it popping in my city, and people wasn’t even familiar with him. Now, it’s like everybody in the world’s talking about him. That’s a huge accomplishment.”

      1. It was decent but Royce clearly wasn’t focused much on it. He was outshined by everyone else. The mixtape however, Royce spazzed.

      1. Yes, and he is a very dignified winner of the Dignified Winner competition 2012, setting him firmly in the running for the Dignified Winner competition 2013 (which he will inevitably win in a rather dignified manner, and so the cycle continues).

      1. it dont mean shit anymore

he gave mac miller a beat and i could probably name a dozen wack dudes to got primo beats in the past 2 years

    1. Action Bronson, Fashawn and Jay electronica are the only new artists I rate Who have come out in the last 5 years. Add Kendrick Lamar and maybe Joey badass. But that’s about it. Big krit got potential.

Most of the new young generation don’t have high standards when it comes to making music.

    2. Is this cass dude serious? Meek best artist in ’12, man meek didn’t even relase 1 decent song las year all i heard from meek was all wack lyrics with trashy beats. Da fuk he smokin

      1. Yeah but his album was a little disapointing to us hip hop heads. We expected more. When you went through the 90s, the standards were so high anything not up to those standards usually is a letdown.

      1. I think you’re right. I remember seeing those interview videos too, though from DJ Vlad. If that’s the case, that’s WACK AS FUCK of hiphopdx to put this video up, KNOWING the situation between the two and that Cassidy damn sure wouldn’t say that now.

    3. For a minute, I thought it said Premo and Cassidy were the “Hottest Artists of 2012”, which made me think “Did I miss something?”

    4. They asked some STOOPED ass people. Only ones bein’ real was Premo, Driicky dude n Chip lol. Although Premo was the only one to be taken serious. And when the fuck was this recorded?!?! Lol.
Cass saying Meek. No one naming Kendrick? Or Joey(except for Premo), I doubt any of those others even know(or new @ the time this was recorded) Joey.
Forreal tho, this shit sound like they stashed these interviews since the mf summer or smth.

    5. Joey Bad @$$ takes it hands down kid is dope, and has burning desire to bring Hip Hop back to it roots

he needs that Premo, Alchemist, and No ID beat

    6. On Kendrick: his album was a little disapointing to us hip hop heads. We expected more. When you went through the 90s, the standards were so high anything not up to those standards usually is a letdown.

    7. Cass calls the dude he’s been dissin as the best rapper of 2012? He’s star struck. Fall back Hustla as the last remains of your career blows away in the wind.
