Earlier in the year people all across the world wore their hoodies in support of slain teenager Trayvon Martin in the hopes of raising awareness of the senseless killing of the Florida youth. And with the election of a new president just days away, the non-partisan grassroots movement Hoodie Vote is hoping people will again don their hoodies, but this time to hit the polls on Election Day (Tuesday, November 6).
The organization, which is already active on 50 college campuses, has garnered the interest of those in the Hip-Hop community including Russell Simmons, Pittsburgh emcee Jasiri X, and Atlanta’s own DJ Greg Street.
“It’s not about capitalizing on something tragic, we want to turn tragedy into triumph,” said Trell Thomas, co-founder and national coordinator. “It’s another opportunity to send a message that while some thought we were robbing, killing, stealing, and looking ‘suspicious’ in our hoodies, we are out here working, making a difference, and changing the world in our hoodies.”
With exactly one week until Election Day, Hoodie Vote hopes that one-million people will show up to vote in their neighborhoods while sporting their hoodies and help break stereotypes in the process.
