Kendrick Lamar Unfazed By Shyne’s “good kid, m.A.A.d city” Comments, Says His Album Is “Classic Worthy”

Following former Bad Boy artist Shyne’s unexpected and rather harsh critique this week of Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar’s debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, many were left wondering if the TDE rapper would respond to Shyne’s comments.

The emcee did just that while speaking with HipHopWired.com at this week’s Samsung Galaxy Note II event in Los Angeles, but didn’t have too much to say in regards to Shyne’s bold criticism.

“It’s really no response [to him],” Kendrick revealed. “I’m not a sensitive guy, so that’s his opinion. Can’t stop what the world thinks, so yeah, that’s him.”

With numerous fans already dishing out the “classic” label for his debut, Kendrick seemed welcoming of the title but instead referred to good kid, m.A.A.d city as being “classic worthy” during his interview.

“It’s classic worthy, you know? But it has to stand with the time and have the years behind it,” said the rapper. “Right now it’s classic worthy and people [will] look back and say, ‘Kendrick’s first album really, really, really outdid everything else and became a classic.’ I went into it with intentions of making it a classic, so I’m glad everybody’s saying that now.”

good kid, m.A.A.d city was released on October 22 and is expected to sell over 200,000 copies in its first week.

    1. The worst thing he can do right now is buy into the hype. Fall back, let the numbers speak for themselves, and keep moving forward cause the window for music like this is small.

    2. Kendrick been humble since the K Dot days, I think he deserves to speak his mind in ONE interview. He worked hard to get to where he’s at and to earn a “classic” title and to sell those records he’s about to sell. Fuck a Moses Levi

    3. MAN IM NO HATER OR NOTHING CUZ IM FROM THE WEST COAST AND LOVE OUR MUSIKKKK…..BUT THIS GUY IS TRASH WITH HIS BISEXUAL LOOK HES GOT GOING ON…..THIS ALBUM IS GARBAGE SHYNE IS RIGHT…..DR. 4. man im getting fed up with hearing about Kendrick Lamar and his album yes its good but you cant call it a classic after 1 week

      1. Yea the majority rules..there was people who didn’t think Illmatic was a “classic” too. There’s always going to people who dislikes something just because its popular. I’m not going to call them haters just stupid as fuck.

    5. Oh My how I am such a sad loser. I sit here locked im my moms basement. No job, no woman, no life. I annoy people on internet web sites because I have no friends. I might be the saddest man on the planet. Kill me Someone please.

      Sincerely Yours
      – A huge Fag

      1. You should talk to Yessir. He’s in your position too. The only difference is he has a goat locked in the basement with him and puts peanuts in his asshole for the goat to eat out.

    6. This album is a classic. Best album of the year easy! First album i’ve bought in a while where I dont skip a track.

    7. I really like Kendricks music but for me its not a classic at all a classic cd for me is a cd with music that I can listen now tomorrow next month and like every next day of my life. But this is just some music that I like for now but in a couple of weeks I will only listen to a couple of songs on it. I liked OD and section 80 better then this and I expected more from this album. I think its overhyped and for me its definetly not a classic.

    8. Kendrick ignoring that dude because everybody knows he aint relevant. Dude just dropped a mixtape that NOBODY is talking about , lol, Shyne couldn’t effect Kendrick at this point with a double album full of diss records, and Kendrick knows that.

Shyne gotta feel stupid, he jumps through all the attention whore hoops……

Step #1 – Give out unsolicited disrespectful opinion on twitter about a young rapper with alot of Buzz.

Step #2 – Argue with other rappers on twitter about it

Step #3 – Call Hot 97 and defend said opinion that nobody asked you for in the first place.

All that work and Kendrick still ignores him like a nobody, because that’s what he is.

    9. Album is pretty good but far from classic.. Section 80 is definitely the classic in his discography to me personally. This isn’t the first cohesive hip hop album & the production doesn’t bring any unheard elements.. Dr Dre brought G-Funk with The Chronic, Nas brought the entire New York experience with Illmatic, Clipse hit different elements/emotions of drug dealing with Hell Hath No Fury, Kanye expressed insecurities with College Dropout.. this KDot project told a story but didn’t really introduce anything new… not classic but even Drake brought that sonic sound to the mainstream.. all & all it’s dope but I can’t say it’s classic

      1. Niether of them are classics.

        Classics:

        Illmatic
        Stillmatic
        Blueprint
        Black Album
        College Dropout
        2001……………….

Many more of course but I am sorry, GKMC and Section 80 are not even in the same realm..

      2. I could see GKMC, but Section .80 is definitely in that realm boy. You’re just pretty much bein biased. 2001? Oh wow lol

    10. last person in the world should talk about a classic is the artist.personally it doesn`t move me it sounds ok.

      1. Nas had the best album of the year. The fuck were you listening to? K Dot album is great as well, but I think Nas album was better.

    11. i like kendrick cd but it is not no classic i actually liked overly dedicated and section 80 better, i liked the concept of good kid and he pulled it off but its not no ready to die, me against the world, reasonable doubt, moment of truth gangstarr or nothing and in fact i think the beats held it back i semi agree with shyne, i liked some of the beats but some of them sounded out of sync and that freestyle beat thats sounded terrible, like should of been on 2 chainz didnt go with cd….also some of kendricks hooks suspect even the hook on poetic justice…..but kendrick cd a solid 4 out of five….and maybe third best album this year, i liked nas life is good and skyzoo dream deferred better and then kendrick and ab soul tied for third

    12. I’ve yet to hear anything from dude thats worth another listen.. I will check this out, but I sure as hell don’t expect to hear anything special!

    13. Only reason people prolly wouldn’t classify it as a classic is because it’s already been done. There isn’t much you can do with hip hop, you got the conscious rappers like Common, nas, Immortal Technique, you got the ignorant trappers like gucci mane, yo gotti, you got the club joint by dudes like roscoe dash, you got the gangsta like jeezy, freddie gibbs, ti,, the weird niggas like wolfgang crew and lil b, then you have the hybrid niggas like kendrick lamar or absoul or joey bada$$. niggas searchin for shit that just isnt there. hip hop cant advance any further than it already has, just take the music for what it is. i bet if most of you actually sat and listened to black hippy, gibbs, joey bada$$, earl sweat shirt, j. cole, youll see that some of these dudes are some real spittas and could lyrically give niggas like nas and jay z a run for their money on the lyrical tip, but most people so biased, and i honestly think is a generational thing. old heads just can’t get past the fact that their time is up and young niggas are gonna take what they started and run with it, and prolly do it better.

      1. Rap cats are afraid to step outside the box and talk about more interesting subjects real or fantasy.

If writers can create stories about literally anything, why don’t more rap cats talk about what rock and metal brought to the table like mythology n shit. It dosent have to be strictly about the streets or personal experience. The problem with hip hop is the fact that our culture is caught up in dumb bullshit like being real.

Theres nothing more hip hop can do because real life is not all that interesting at the end of the day. We need more balance and less songs selling alcohol, cars and clothing.

Imagination and creativity is shunned, while boasting and posturing is rewarded. Imagine what Kurt Cobain would say about hip hop today. You don’t hear timeless classics in clubs or titty bars. And no self respecting artist would want their work to be played in such a way.

    14. DX, what the hell are you doing about this Malone guy messing about with the comments section? It’s so annoying and a cry for attention but yet you guys still let him put rubbish on here, why???

    15. “Classic”?…. must not know definition of a classic. SMH. These lil homies imaginations run wilder N wilder every year. #AmbitionsAsARider

    16. Im starting to think Malone is working with Dx to sensor popular opinions…if not..ya’ll GOT to do something about this.

      1. How do we know Malone is just 1 person? The way this shitty comment section is designed it could be different people postin the same troll shit. It could even be a bot since theres no captcha or anything. reminds me of tyler durden teaching DX a lesson about website design.

    17. no no i agree with shyne po kendricks new and last albums were wack i cant bump that shit at house party tonight its only going to bring my guests down ..but i could bump 50 cent and mobb deep and nate doggs have a party if you want tooo

    18. For the record, SPM is a scumbag. Strictly local. Probably the only famous thing he ever did was go to prison. Maybe he’s sharing a cell with Mr. Shadow lol

      1. YOUR A FUCKEN IDIOT!!! IF U KNOW HOW THE TX AND CA SYSTEM WORKS U WOULD KNOW SPM DIDNT DO SHIT BUT PUT HIMSELF ON THE FEDS SPOTLIGHT BY BEING MEXICAN AND SUCCEEDING INTHE RAP GAME. AINT NO OTHER MEXICAN RAPPER REACHED HIS LEVEL IN SELLING RECORDS OR LYRICALLY… THERE ARE SUM LIKE SICKJACKEN BUT5 VERY FEW…WHAT A WASTE OF TALENT. HES ABOVE ALL THESE MAINSTREAM TX RAPPERS AND HES NOT EVEN ON THE BOOKS. I END THIS IN HIS WORDS “YOU A DISGRACE YOU SHOULD WISH WELL FOR YOUR OWN RACE”

    19. The online clip of 2 girls and one cup will be better than anything Kendrick, Game or myself put out..

    20. Props to Kendrick for handling Shyne’s comment the way he did. No feelings hurt, no bitching. I still feel like GKMC is a couple of steps behind Section.80 tho – that’s probably because his first album was that fucking awesome.

      1. Hey man me and some friends are having barbeque down at my crib man.. its going to be off the hook man.. you should come man..

        Sincerely Yours
        -Malone

      2. DONT BAN HIM. He has some funny posts. Better than you fucking virgin bitches talking about rap like you know anything about it. Fucking losers.

    21. Just listened to GKMC yesterday, and I was very impressed with it. Not sure why it’s getting a whole lot of backlash. Not as good as Section 80 but still a very solid album. I’m a fan of concept albums so that’s part of the reason why. Only problem I find with the album is that a few parts run a little too long, specifically Sing of Me/Dying of Thirst and Real. Both good songs but are a little too long for my liking. And although I understand that Backseat Freestyle was supposed to be a fun song, I still found it a little annoying. Other than those, it was an all around great album.

      1. Backseat was supposed to express him as 17, freestyling in the Toyota with his homies before all the hard stuff happens.

    22. The album is kinda overrated, it is good. It will not be a classic album because it is trying to hard in my opinion. there is not theme of the album, it is more like a collection of songs, don’t get me wrong I liked the album and it is good. good album not a classic.

      1. I felt the same when i first got it. But after listening to the fuck out of it i think it is A GEM! It actually really is a concept album, and the way he put the album together was pretty great.

      2. maybe I’ll listen to it again, I see the concept behind the music, I said it is a good CD, the lyrical content is there, the beats are ok, I’ll continue to listen to it to see more about it, but my first impression it is a pretty good cd not a classic.

    23. LMAO! Malone brings enlightenment to these Articles cause have time they shit..like Lil Gayne seizures and shit..not interested in shit like that..want to know sales upcoming artist mixtapes and shit beefs..tf i care bout car accidents and shit

    25. No theme? Just a collection of songs? No offense (which means I’m gone say some offense shit) you must have not listened to the album. The whole fucking album ties together. Did you not hear the skits/transitions in between every song? The album tells the life of Kendrick at 17 from start to finish. From taking his momma car, fucking with a chick, getting jumped , riding with the homies, a friend getting killed all in the same day with him parents checking in on him through out it all. This shit is the exact opposite of every thing you just posted. In my opinion. But no offense tho….

      1. just cause he can write a story doesnt make it classic

        the overall sound sucks

the peer pressure song was pretty good except of the piece of shit intro

every new school artist falls off at their debut album

      1. which for some reason is all that people care about.. i suppose your not “relevant” till a major signs you.. even though most major label albums these days are TERRIBLE.. have to think back to j.cole for a decent one.. and arguably slaughterhouse

    29. admit it, bitch niggas. Kendrick is better than your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper. GKMC holds a score of 91 out of 100 at Metacritic… ha! support the young nigga, and buy his masterpiece/modern classic album! fuck Taylor Swift. oh and fuck Kanye West for making her popular. fuck you nigga!

    30. All I got for Shyne is ‘bitch, don’t kill my vibe”

On the side note, Shyne shed how he felt about my album, whether he understands how he said it came off offensive, is up for debate as this is a free world. I’m ok with that; We are aloud to say whatever we want. Now the coast is riding with me, if my album is trash, the coast is trash. There are implications when someone feels offended(the coast will react) and that’s where we’re right now.

PPL feeding this blitz from shyne are also making it worse. He can quell this because he sorta started it not knowing by how he shed his feelings was salty amidst freedom of speech. Either way I’ma keep doing me under these “money trees”. He mentioned tough love, TDE knows tough love and we’ll return the favor.

      Appreciate it.
      One luv

      1. werd what u expect..this albums a beast and deserves every bit of shyne (lol fuck shyne) this guys got the most fucked up hair cut I EVER SEEN HAHAHA

    31. it aint no classic jeez he needs to wake up illimatic slim shady lp documentry 2001 ready to die get rich die trying all eyes on me eminem show kanye collage drop out the kinda album that hv classic status if k dot finks his album up there wiv them he need to wake up its gd album nuthing more nuthing less

      1. All those albums are great but they are also all at least 10yrs old….so wait 10yrs before determining whether or not gkmc is or isn’t a classic

    32. Most of yall have to realize that kendrick is a lyricist. his album is a story. it also has an outkast vibe to it and its very diffrent. so yeah it can be considered as a classic because you dont know any album that has these types of elements. on the other note, if the real critics give him a score of 91! and his sells are projected 200,000 in the first week in this economy maybe down the road you will have to consider it as a classic because everyone else will

    33. Lamar really responded appropriately with this one. Game is the one really messing up. Kendrick blew it off like whatever, and HE’S the one who’s material got dissed! Game meanwhile is catching feelings over something that isn’t even his business. Making threats over someone having an opinion on a music album?? WOW.
