The Source Hip-Hop Music Awards are moving to Miami and hiring additional security in order to avoid the problems that caused last year’s show to be shut down.

The first Source Awards took place in New York in 1994, but the event went on a hiatus for three years after tensions escalated between the East and West Coast MCs in attendance at the 1995 show. The Source Awards returned in 1999 with a new location and a new television deal. The 1999 show took place at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater before moving to the Pasadena Civic Center last year. Both aired on UPN, although the 2000 edition had to use footage taped after the event to fill out the broadcast after numerous scuffles broke out, including one between E-40 and a former associate.

This year’s Source Awards will again be broadcast by UPN, but tickets to the August event will be distributed by invitation only. Click here for the full list of nominees.
