Swizz Beatz Discusses “Summer On Smash” Collaboration With Nas

Nas and Swizz Beatz have a history of collaborations. The producer has crafted songs such as “Twilight” for the Bravehearts, “Braveheart Party” and Nas appeared on Swizz’s Swizz Beatz Presents G.H.E.T.T.O. Stories album in 2002.

Recently, Swizz produced “Summer on Smash,” an energetic cut from Nas’ latest album, Life Is Good. In an interview with MTV News, the producer discussed the track.

Swizz revealed that he and Nas worked on several tracks. “We collaborated on a couple of other joints also, it was a fun time working with my Virgo brother,” he explained.

Swizz specifically discussed “Summer on Smash,” which also features singer Miguel, and how it differs from the rest of the album. “I listened to the album and the whole entire album was super lyrical, it had all the different elements, I just think that it was perfect because it was dropping in the summer.”

“You know as a producer you’re a fan of the artist so you have stuff like, ‘Yo I need him to do this,'” he added. “He missed out on a couple on this album that y’all gonna say that too, as well, but yo man Life Is Good.”

    1. Its not often that the dude that makes the wackest song on an album gets interviewed about how that wack shit came together.

    2. You made a song called “summer on smash” for an album that was dropping in the summer.

You must have a very good sense of timing.

    3. whenever ur brain says “let’s just do a fun summer record”, you’re supposed to say no…

    4. This track and The Don kept the album from being a classic…In my opinion. That Don beat is wak!, smh lol

      1. I just hate that beat, except for the beginning of the 3rd verse. BUT! I just seen him perform it on the Colbert Report an that shit was EPIC! lol so I take that back, somewhat.

      1. Album was cool but even if that song was replaced with Nasty (why was that a bonus cut…) it still wouldn’t even be a debatable classic. Classic albums need to be innovative and this albu, while good, simply wasn’t. Not only that but the quality wasnt on par with classic albums either. Album is good and i will buy it but you NaS stans acting like everything he puts out is a classic is ridiculous.

    5. “Recently, Swizz produced “Summer on Smash,” an energetic cut from Nas’ latest album, Life Is Good.”

“energetic cut” that was a nice way of putting it…

    6. Who’s Real, Who’s fake on Jada’s last album, On to the Next One on Jay’s last album and now this. It’s becoming a habit for Swizz.

    7. the last time I really like any of homie’s contributions was when he was with DMX..at least his paintings are still dope

    8. I’ll admit, Summer on Smash is that song that will get skipped throughout the whole album’s play. It isn’t horrible though if you have it playing at a party.

    9. I was mad as fuck when I heard this track. Large Pro’s production and attention to detail absolutely shitted on Swizz’s overly repetitive and elementary beat making abilities. That bullshit ass track is the only blemish on a otherwise flawless project.

      1. Large proffessor didn’t contribute any of the production, he just had a feature. The rest of the album was mostly helmed by No I.D and Salaam Remi. Get your facts right bro.

    10. swizz voice “this song is trash, this song is trash, everybody knows that this song is trash, they hit me with some cash, so like a hoe I gave them ass, EVERYBODY KNOWS I ruined Nas’s smash!” -whoever worked on this album in anyway should of stopped this failure. (That includes ALL producers, engineers, A&Rs, even INTERNS!)

    11. Lol @ all the below zombies getting mad at a club banger cos it got Swizzy on it. Peeps just like to automatically hate on something if its not to their taste. D irony to dis is that these same peeps will prolly be loosing it to dis record in the club just like they did to ochie wally n You owe me in the club/strip club respectively.
Admittedly, Swizy has got misteps just lik every other producer but aint nothing wrong with records like Whos real on Kiss’s album n Jays onto the next one. Nuff said.

      1. Who’s real and On to the next one were GARBAGE. What the fuck? It’s not just “missteps” About 90% of the beats he puts out are wack.

    12. OFFICER RICKY AND HIS DEPUTIES HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR MONTHS ABOUT HAVING ALBUM OF THE YEAR THE BIGGEST AND BEST AND THEN NAS CAME IN OUT OF NOW WHERE AND DROPPED ALBUM OF YEAR AND XXL GAVE IT XXL THEIR HIGHEST RATTING HA HA GO SUPPORT

    13. Fuck swizz beatz, dude is garbage and ruins every song he touches. Summer on Smash was the weakest song on an otherwise dope album. Wish rappers would stop fucking with this fool.

    14. I actually like Summer on Smash. I think the beat is nice, I just cant stand Swizz Beats. Take him off the hook and it probably wont be as bad.

    15. I don’t hate the song, it is what it is (club song), it just doesn’t mesh very well with the rest of the album.

    16. This song is utter fucking dogshit; Nasir should be ashamed it’s even there. ZERO ‘bitches’ will buy this because of that song and all it does is annoy everyone else.

He cut “Nasty” for this garbage?

Nas is the dumbest smart nigga ever.

      1. The label makes you put those kinds of songs on albums. It’s not Nas’ fault…He’s on a major label, that’s what they artists do or they won’t let you drop it.

      2. “summer on smash” should have been the bonus track and “nasty” should have been on the actual album.

      3. Shut up with that label shit. Nas alone and nobody else decided to put this horrible garbage that throws off the entire album on there.

    17. Summer on Smash is actually dope which is contrary to what some are saying. It’s a summer jam for those cats who are getting it (money and chicks)!

    18. Much like the recent Slaughterhouse song, the Watch The Throne track, Kanye’s Lord Lord Lord, and countless other songs ruined by this dude. This is easily the worst song on an otherwise very solid album. I STILL DON’T GET WHY GOOD MCs INSIST ON PUTTING THIS FUCKIN DUDE ON THEIR ALBUMS. Time and time again he proves to be useless. He was cool in like 98-99 during the RR era. Other than that dude is wack.

      1. Cosign except he didn’t ruin that horrible SH song, infact between the wack annoying verses and the horrible production his hook was actually the best part (that’s how awful that song was, and this is coming from a SH fan.)

    19. Zombies and haters alike getting all emotional n mushy cos of a club banger. Niggas that dont act rite. The track is wat it is, its for d clubs, dnt be mad cos u not paid/cool enuf to get bad bitches on a hot summer nite. Ahhh.

    20. it’s the perfect song to roll another paper plane…go grab another drink…take a piss…intermission…

    21. Life Is Good will flop, it will sell 30k in its first week according to hitsdailydouble.com. lmao. Nas is overrated and sales will show ait. you dickriders will listen to Lil Wayne again. lmao swag

    22. Utter goddamn garbage. NOBODY will buy the album for this horrible song. Why not just make it the (flop) single and keep the album true?

Because Nas ALWAYS flinches, always fucks it up somehow.

      1. so no one, absolutely no one, will buy the album because of one song they never heard? You’re trying too hard with the hatred REX, you’re typing sheer stupidity.

    23. fucking piece of shit song ruined the album. if it wouldn’t have been on it then the album would have been an indisputable classic, or near-classic. fuck you swizz beatz, def jam, and all other parties responsible for this garbage-azz record making the final cut!

      1. 1000% true though Nasir Jones has to take the blame also. Dipshit ruined what would have been a perfect ALBUM within the goals he set for it.

      2. Nas scraps the best tracks and always decides to put on garbage instead. The bonus tracks are better than the great majority of the album. And he always had horrible tracks that ruined otherwise great albums, Braveheart Party on Stillmatic, Zone Out on God’s Son and Make The World Go Round on Untitled and now this garbage.
