Much has been made of Frank Ocean’s recent open letter about his sexuality. While droves of artists came forward in support of the singer, it appears that at least one artist is skeptical of the revelation.

In an interview with VladTV, Mysonne explained recent comments he made on Twitter, where he decried Frank Ocean’s choice, calling it a “cowardly move” and saying it was “deceitful” to his fan base:

“Well basically what I said was I felt that he made a coward’s move,” he said of Frank Ocean’s decision. “When you come into this industry, we’re all faced with dilemmas and we’re all faced with choices and I think when you take a choice to deceive a fan base based on whatever it is, whatever it is that you represent – if you represent it, say, ‘This is what I represent.’ Don’t wait until you get a fan base following you because they think you represent something else and then say, ‘Oh, by the way, I just happen to be bisexual or gay.’ Especially as an R&B artist.”

Mysonne continued, citing Ocean’s decision to push his album Channel Orange to an earlier release date. “I felt that the timing, also, made it real suspect to me. Oh, now you wait until your album’s about to drop?”

“It had nothing to do with your sexuality or anything,” he added. “If a homosexual had made the same statement and had came out and he had fooled every gay person to following him and said, ‘You know what? I’m straight now.’ I just think it’s deceit and I just think it’s cowardice, and I think for us not to acknowledge what it is, or for us to praise that, gives off the wrong sense of what we stand for. It gives off the wrong message.”

Mysonne concluded that Ocean’s choice was about selling albums. “The Hip Hop community is already under fire, and when we keep using these cheap gimmicks and strategies to sell records, and build up [buzz], it just demeans the quality of what we do.”
