Yesterday (June 2), De La Soul (backed by The Roots) headlined the fifth annual Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Held at the Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing, the outdoor event featured two stages, including sets by Shabazz Palaces, Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire, Danny Brown, Kids These Days, Wale and deejay Stretch Armstrong, among others. The afternoon was hosted by Amanda Diva.

The first of the two-day event ended with the three founding members of De La Soul performing with backing by The Roots, including emcee Black Thought. The two legendary Hip Hop outfits were joined by Yasiin Bey (f/k/a Mos Def), who assisted their set, along with closing out the evening playing some of his own solo works, in addition to guest spots. DJ Jazzy Jeff was among the on-stage guests in attendance at the event that ran nearly 12 hours.

Day two, beginning this evening (June 3) features a full Rakim set of Paid In Full, backed by The Roots. Kid Cudi and others are also promised to perform.
