Nas, Common & Q-Tip Rumored To Be Forming As Super Group The Standard

Back in 2007, Q-Tip and Common announced that they were forming the super group The Standard, though a full-length project is yet to come to light.

According to NYDN, Nas is reportedly set to join the group, though official plans are yet to be made for the group’s album. When asked if he plans to record with Q-Tip and Common, Nas responded, “Definitely,” fueling speculation that the duo could become a trio.

Q-Tip is also at work on his third official solo album, the follow up to 2008’s The Renaissance, while Nas is recording his next LP Life is Good.

    1. This would be fire! Common’s Dreamer/Believer album was a classic and Ghetto Dreams they collaborated on was fire. Shame it’s not NO ID that they’re making a trio with.

      1. Dude Dreamer/Believer album is flat-out average.Fuck is wrong with people claiming shit is classic. So what, now every ol’ass rapper album is classic…? Truth be told-that album is average…

Ready to Die album OR think dreamer/believer album is instant classic

      2. No ID is a good producer but not a Great Producer…the new Common album is lackluster sonically to be honest! I’m actually dreading the thought of Nas having too much No ID on his album, because it won’t be aggressive enough for what Nas needs

      3. and you niggas are bloodthirsty opinion wolves

fuck cares if a nigga calls it classic. that’s his opinion, maybe he liked it beyond any other album in ’11. wouldn’t be half bad a pick either. would you rather he call Take Care a classic… foolishness

      4. I thought Take Care was better than The Dreamer/The Believer overall. That’s just my opinion though and I listen to ppl like The Roots, ATCQ, Kendrick Lamar, Outkast, The Game, Phonte etc.

      5. The Dreamer/The Believer is miles ahead of Take Care in my book. Common has soul & more to say than Drake who beats the same topics to death (past gfs, fame etc). I enjoyed the soul samples. You see what happened when Drake tried to spit on a soul sample (Lord Knows) he got WASHED. He aint built for that lol

    2. As others have noted this isn’t what Nas needs right now. He needs to release Life is Good withsKanye & RZA production. He was supposed to work with Frank Ocean way before Watch the Throne but they stole his idea as usual.

    3. don’t fret nas fans, nas is a funny dude. he always goes along with this kind of sh*t. yet it never pans out.

      see premo project

      see lost tapes 2

see nas will appear on jay-z’s “new york state of mind”

see nas slated for “only built for cuban linx 2”

see nas headed to G.O.O.D. music

see nas signs with murder ink

see nas working on full album with mobb deep

      so on and so forth….

    4. i knew nas and common couldnt just do an entire album together like it was somethin missing.. maybe q-tip will fill that void.. you know they gonna have to put az somewhere in this

    5. need a trailer, at least 3 tracks, pics of them in the studio to even believe or consider to think about an album like this.

    6. People on this site throw “classic” around for the most boring and average albums these days. There is only a handful of truly “classic” albums. You kids nowadays don’t know your ass from your elbows. I can’t even remember the last album that deserved the “classic” title. An album is only a classic if you are listening to in 10 years from now, there’s no such thing as an instant “classic”. All you 90s babies fucking ruined hip hop by buying into all these gimmicks. Fuck a Rick Ross fuck a drake fuck a Lil wayne fuck a wiz Khalifa fuck a nicki minaj fuck an odd future. THAT SHIT IS ALL STRAIGHT UP GIMMICKS. I’m not a hater, I’m REALISTIC. Commons last album was BORING. He’s dope don’t get me wrong. Shit was far away from a “classic”. You kids are either deaf or straight retarded

      1. ^preach!!!!!! cosign 100% agree..only 3 classic albums in this decade and they are: J Dilla- Donuts, Blu- Below the heavens, Lupe- Food & Liqour. nuff said.

      2. It’s only a problem when people brandish the term “classic” on unworthy bullshit like 50, Wayne, Drake or Bad Meets Evil. There are, however, dope rap records that have been released in the past five years. I’ll not mention them, as there’s too many, but already this year I’d categorize Black and Brown, the Gangrene record and Homeboy Sandman new shit as classic, and I’m sure they’ll still be gettin’ wrecked in ten years times.

      3. You just grouped Bad Meets Evil in with wack rappers like 50, Wayne, and Drake. I can tell the only BME song you’ve ever heard was Lighters….
Anyways I agree with the first person, people throw classic at every single album with good lyrics and beats, regardless if they are of classic quality. Also everybody seems to be ignoring important things like flow, subject matter, and creativity nowadays…

      4. @J Dilla Gong..Is death real?:, So College Dropout Or Common’s BE Dont make your list of classics over the decade, Your delusional son.

      5. @almar how am i being delusional when im stating the facts?…please explain? although College Dropout is a very great album but holds no weight to Food & Liqour and Below The Heavens and by far aint touching those 2 albums lyrically..and as for BE its a great album but there’s couple of skippable tracks on there like “So Far to Go” that have you wondering what in the hell is common doing on that “beautiful, soulful, amazing J dilla beat” and not ripping it right..SMH..everytime i skip that track and play the instrumental just scratches my head why jay dilla gave that inspirational beat to common SMH…kanye shrug.. to be branded “Classic” means no skipable tracks everything heavy and its timeless where you can keep playing those records over & over & over & over again..kinda like Illmatic & It Was Written & Reosonable Doubt..yea i think your lying to yourself if you think those lps are classic.. and FYI..only Blu and Elzhi every ripped j dilla beat the right way..common failed miserably..

      6. @J Dilla Gong? That “So Far To Go” track was on Finding Forever. Be had “The Corner”, “Testify” & “Go!” on it. And I disagree with both albums being below “Below The Heavens”. Don’t get me wrong I love that album and would call it the dreaded C-word (or classic for you dumbasses) in a heartbeat, but if I were to put them on a list, I would put those two & maybe even MBDTF above it.

But we’re all entitled to our opinions. Just expressing mine.

      7. all this discussion actually proved how wrong you are, OP. it ain’t necessarily that people throw around ‘classic’ at every album, it’s that people simply decide for themselves what is classic and what ain’t. and there’s no problem with that.

you really think every hip-hop head will decree Nas’ Illmatic, Jay’s Reasonable Doubt, etc as classic albums? no! it shouldn’t matter that much to you man.

just tell yourself if a nigga called Common’s last album classic, that just means he liked it. ain’t that enough? would you rather he call Recovery a classic? or lil’ wayne’s C3? or Take Care? better Dreamer/Believer than any of those ones.

if you’re trying to make the world agree with your definition of “hip-hop classic”, then you gon lose a lot of sleep, nigga. hell, you’re losin a lot of sleep already, callin out this current generation n shit like an old folks home timer with a walking stick up his prostate.

      8. @ETK, how could a real hip-hop head not recognize Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt as classic albums? “Classic” is not synonymous with “like”. I don’t like Radiohead or Michael Jackson’s music, but they both have made some timeless and classic music. If you deny that you’re just stubborn and even ignorant, just like you would be to not dub Illmatic a “classic”.

@J Dilla Gong, I’m not going to get in the debate over whether or not Be or College Dropout are classics, those will prove themselves as classics or not over time. In my opinion, Be and Kanye’s first two albums will prove to be timeless classics, but that’s speculation. One thing you said is undeniable truth – Donuts is classic. One of the best hip-hop albums of all time and in my opinion no one has spoken without words so loudly through music. You’re clearly not a Common fan, but you also aren’t as big a Dilla fan as you claim to be because if you were you would know Common’s Like Water for Chocolate album was produced almost entirely by Jay Dee. You ever heard “The Light”? Didn’t think so. Yeah, Com isn’t at his best on So Far to Go, but to say Blu and Elzhi are the only ones to rip a Dilla beat correct? You’re a bandwagon Dilla fan – how about Black Thought? Mos Def? Guilty Simpson? The rest of Slum Village (oh wait, do you even know who they are?)? Busta Rhymes?

      9. classic is not synonymous with unanimous either. (not talkin about me here)

throwing big names up like MJ won’t change shit, I’m talkin about current acclaimed material, which will draw more polarized opinions

      1. did you really just say as if you valley girl little bitch, shouldnt you be in front of your tv watching gabba gabba?

Hip-hop rap fans ain’t shit no more. A real muthafucka would respect the real, regardless of where you from. Hence, the muthafuckin’ West/East/Mid-West niggaz I named. Fraud ass wannabe hip-hop heads.

    8. “You sittin at home doin this shit? Stop fuckin around and be a man..”

      Nas wtf, son?!?!?

Go get with my nigga AZ, hit Premo for that production, and lets make one mo run to mt. hip hop and show niggas how its done before the flood clears out the very last of niggas who really lived and cared about the culture. c’mon son…we need that!!!!!!!!

      Seriously! Like yesterday!!!! Please dunny!!!

    9. This project would be interesting, but it seems Common doesn’t really fit in with Tip and Nas. Could be me though.

    10. NaS the Distant Relatives album was cool and I’m sure this will be too, but please, all the fans want a collabo album with AZ and PREMO first….

    11. Wow. I’d be the first in line for that one. I always been a Tribe fan, but after watchin’ that documentary I got a new respect for Q-Tip’s production genius. I would love to see this album actually happen.

    12. Hm.. i would probly cop that album.. i still think no “group” can stand up to slaughterhouse but still with this group and the slaughters hip hop would be in great hands for sho.

      1. ^Raindrops, Pray(It’s a shame), Monsters in My Head, Cut You Loose, Devil’s got a hold of me, move on
Yeah alot of their songs are pointless but they said their next album would be more meaningful and creative, and the songs I listed are really deep.

    13. The album’s gonna be called Bankrupt, Over the Hill & Irrelevant cuz no one gives a fuck about these guys anymore.

    14. thank you hip hop. its a wrap. i dont realy like common. but just nas and qtip alone its a wrap lol. i hope qtip raps on that shit. a tribe called quest nas def top ten ever eveerr in the game

    15. i wanna hear a nas and ross album too. if nas n ross make a album together its oveeer. game set match. they need to make that happen
      nas&ross>>>>>>>>>>> kanye&jayz

      1. Really?….you could’nt think of anybody better than Ross?….I’m not going to shit on your opinion..but that seems pretty random

      2. he just said ross cause ross chooses great beats. if his beats were wack no one would be asking for a ross/nas collabo

      3. not that random considering theyve already collabed together, i agree though, ross is dope when hes not on that stupid trap shit. deeper than rap was phenomenal. and i agree, id def pick up a nas and ross album

    16. as dope as this sounds, I think everyone knows that the odds of an album actually coming to fruition from this is slim to none.

      1. OL’ I FIT IN DA CROWD FCUKBOI, IF THEY WIPED SH!T ON THEY FACE AND TWERKED IN FRONT OF HIGHWAY TRAFFIC WOULD U DO IT 2? IF THEY FLOPPED OFFA HEADLINE, U BEEN FLOPPED AT LIFE. 18. Sooo, they kinda sorta are going to be in this group? or they fucking are for certain? where’s the confirmation? Nas say’s he Definitely will record with them?
On a side note, I am loving all these MC’s joining forces.

    19. If this happen, this would be one of the BEST group ever… IF tip comes hard with the beats and “Nasty” Nas returns back to his old self….Common always comes correct.

    20. The Firm II, big fucking deal. Maybe they can get Dre off drugs long enough to make more shitty beats.

Nas is GOAT but this is both silly and highly unlikely to happen.

    21. NIGGAS THINK THIS IS REALLY GOING TO HAPPEN? NAS CANT EVEN DROP LOST TAPES AND COMMON IS ABOUT TO GET DROPPED FROM HIS LABEL AGAIN. WHEN HAS Q TIP DID ANYTHING? THIS IS NOT HAPPENING

    22. to that dude down there, it ain’t necessarily that people throw around ‘classic’ at every album, it’s that people simply decide for themselves what is classic and what ain’t. and there’s no problem with that.

you really think every hip-hop head will decree Nas’ Illmatic, Jay’s Reasonable Doubt, etc as classic albums? no! it shouldn’t matter that much to you man.

      1. So sad seeing people group in Eminem with Lil Wayne and Drake….. The only similarity is they are popular….. one makes good music the others make trash… but you wouldn’t know because you are biased to underground.
But that’s not the main point of your comment so anyways I agree with the general idea of what you are saying to an extent. My problem is when people start saying albums with great lyrics but wack beats, terrible flow, and lacking subject matter are classics…

      1. ^haha did this nigga just say Nas got boddied by ricky rozay on that triple beam dreams??? son do you even know what boddied means? hahaha funniest comment ive read today lol go back on the wacka flaka joint you on..thats more you pace. lmao this dumbass epic FAIL

    23. @the nigga bove me

Nas didn’t get bodied but Rozay outdid him. Nas still an ill ass rapper but his time as passed.

      Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Guess the dumb bitches are allowed out of their purgatory for fresh air after all.

Go suck on a donkey’s dick and then get power kicked by it, bitch ass nigga.

      2. you talkn bout on “Triple Beam Dreams”?? NaS absolutely bodied Ross on that. If you listened to both of their verses AT ALL in ANY WAY you would know this.

    24. A Super group in Hip Hop would be if Nas were to replace Kurupt in the Four Horsemen (HRSMN) and it be

      Canibus
      Ras Kass
      Killah Priest
      Nas

Now that would be a group of the century – i mean Nas has worked with these supa mc’s individually imagine him being part of the group? Common & Q-Tip don’t carry that heavyweight titles like Ras Kass, Killah Priest & Canibus do

if not Nas, atleast Kurupt must be replaced by Chino XL

      1. NaS isnt that type of super lyrical punchline rapper so that really wouldn’t work out. He’s more of a creative storyteller/socially aware artist.

    25. Believe it when I see it. Sounds like innuendo and answering a hypothetical to me.

I’d rather have that Nas/AZ collabo. It’s not like we’ve awaited that forever and ever…oh wait.

    26. more hollow talk. nas won’t do shit like this cuz he’s working to pay his wife and uncle sam back, he threw his integrity and pride out the window the day he married kelis. nas needs big paydays. he’s gonna go down in a ball of flames. expect to see him on a bunch of wack new rappers shit, piss his old fans off, and fail miserably. premier album won’t happen, this won’t happen.

q-tip and common got cake, they’re smart with their money, they can afford to do passion projects like this. nas is the biggest star and the biggest bum of the bunch. very sad the way nas story played out. nas is goign to continue shitting on his old fans till even his biggest stans think he sucks, and he’ll bow out a loser after reaching for the moon.

      1. Co-Sign. Says enough about him and his decisions when your second best project is an album that contains previously unreleased tracks.

      2. have you ever listened to nas? more importantly, have you listened to any music this man has put out since 2010? especially last year all he did was drop fire verses, he still shits on 110% of rappers every time he comes close to a microphone. if you seriously think that tax troubles and marrying a woman have ever or will ever change the talent and integrity with which he spits then you’re out of your fucking mind. i will admit that in most of his interviews he just kinda says things so this album with com and q-tip probly won’t happen but regardless, nas doesn’t give a fuck about a payday if it means selling out in any way. the audacity you have to call him a bum is shameful. listen to “nasty” and let me know how much he “sold out” by making that the first single from Life Is Good

      3. ^ nas dickrider

i was a big nas fan, unlike you, i don’t blindly dickride every move nas makes. nas shit since 2010? like the wack untitled album that was sposed to be some kinda revolutionary piece with wack desperate commerical single attempts like hero and money make the world go round? you mean like nas announcing lost tapes 2, only for it to get shelved and never drop? you mean like nas doing a wack album with bob marleys wack hack half son, that a very small group of ppl felt was good? like announcing life is good almost a year ago, and having exactly one song and video out with no follow up news?

get real. dickriding fans like you are the reason niggas get fat and lazy, never call your picks on bullshit and will accept anything you get. you probably think the dj premier album is still on it’s way, more bullshit from nas.

      4. the untitled album did have a few weak commercial attempts, but “Fried Chicken” and “Queens Get the Money”? The album was not wack as an album, a few songs were truly wack though. And “bob marleys wack hack half son”? Are you joking man? I’m not even a big fan of the Distant Relatives joint, but it was an important piece of music to come out in this day and age, and to call any of Bob’s sons a “wack hack” is clearly coming from a place of stupidity. All of them are at least respectable musicians/artists, and Damian has put out some great stuff. And I remember hearing “Foul Breeze” last year and thinking damn, Nas is still the man. Bottom line, you can’t point to enough wack Nas shit to even come close to having the argument you’re trying to put forth. You’re talking about the same man who did Illmatic, the same man who is widely considered the GOAT. You want to talk about Kelis? I thought this was a hip-hop website, not fucking TMZ.

    27. RICK ROSS “GOD FORGIVES, I DON’T” SOUNDTRACK HAS BEEN LEAKED:
      1. Holy Food
      2. High On Munchies
      3. Big Mac Untouchable
      4. Burger Diamonds
      5. Feed Em
      6. Ronald Skit
      7. Eat Forever
      8. Triple Cheese Burgers
      9. Chicken Games
      10. New Pizza

      13. I Swear To KFC

      16. Eat Eat f/ Future
      17. MMG The Food Is Ours
      18. Hungry Heart
      19. Stay Feedin

    28. Anybody who followed Nas over the course of his career knows that he talks nothing but shit in most of his interviews. This is one of them.

    29. Who got the strongest team?

YMCMB – Lil Wayne, Birdman, Drake, Busta Rhymes ,Nicki Minaj, Mystikal, Bow Wow
MMG – Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Wale, Triple Cs
Slaughterhouse – Royce Da 5’9, Crooked I, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz
GOOD Music – Kanye West, Pusha T, Cyhi Da Prynce, Big Sean
Aftermath – Dr Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent, Slim Da Mobster
      Wu-Tang
Bad Boy – Diddy, Machine Gun Kelly, French Montana, Red Cafe
The HRSMN – Ras Kass, Canibus, Kurupt, Killah Priest
M.A.R.S – Cormega, Saigon, Roc Marciano, Action Bronson
‘The Standard’ – Nas, Q-Tip, Common, AZ (to balance things out)

      1. Based on popularity: YCMB and MMG
Based on Skill: Slaughterhouse, M.A.R.S., and The Standard

The only other group i would throw in there is the Money Making Jam Boys with Black Thought, STS, Truck North, Greg Porn, and Dice Raw… I think skill wise they can stand up to any of these groups

      2. if the standard is actually going to happen then they will be the sickest group for lyrics and WU TANG FOREVER. all those groups have a couple of shit artists, but every artist in wu tang clan got a unique style and flow

      3. truthfully, The HRSMN was the strongest group in hip hop history…why did it have to be Ras Kass, id wish it was Kurupt who left, then get replace by Nas (wishful thinking) lol or Pharoah Monch or Chino XL – no one would have come close to the most quotable group ever to grace the mic

M Mighty needs to do something, get Razy back to the group

    30. im startin to think Nas duckin the AZ collabo because that nigga AZ still got that heat and Nas pen hasnt been as potent as it could be…

I mean why would u not do that album? Niggas would definitely cop that shit! I dont give a fuck about the age demographic. That shit would have all kind of heads who been bummed out hype to go cop. Young niggas would check for it because all the older heads would be talkin about that shit. That shit would put raw Hip Hop back on the map. Just for the fuck of it, they could do a stupid joint with Slaughterhouse & Eminem on it and that would tie them in with their market and give Premo his chance to have Em on a one his tracks…shady and them on that hip hop anyway so wtf?? Wins for everybody!

Let them kids have “they” music, shit.

      1. yea true..maybe u right. i hope not tho. them niggas sounded great together. shit sounded meant to be in terms of style.

i want to say do that shit anyway for the fans, but forcing it wouldnt be good.

    31. If this group comes out, Hip Hop has returned, if not, We gonna have to hear the same old BS from YMCMB, i aint a hater but they are getting me vex!its like they can release any sh*t and its gold,Real rappers aint getting the respect they deserve!!!

    32. Booooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Note to all: First, Q-Tip: Do another Tribe album or just go away..Love Movement wasn’t that hot…Common: stay on them real beats and stay away from that Electric Circus and Universal Mind Control crap… Finally, Nas: call Large Professor, Preem, Pete, LES and Tip for production for your next solo, plus do the AZ collab album (what the people want) or go away…

    33. What happen to the album Nas.Com? I thought it was just gonna be Nas & Common but it’s coo don’t mind another Legend added to the group I hope they do what they say they gon do and make that happen I pray it’s not just hype unlike Dr. Dre wit Detox.

    34. LONZO

Way to perpetuate hip hop as the disgraceful Maury Show bitchmade fiasco it is for the most part today. ‘Nas got to do wack features to pay Kelis’…’Nas gave up his integrity when he married Kelis’… ‘Com and Tip were smart with their money while Nas has to get big paydays’…’Nas has Uncle Sam on his back’. You should be on Montell like that dumb bitch who claimed J Bieber was her baby’s father. You might as well be getting Jay to take a paternity test to prove that you were his first child and not Blue Ivy.

Stop acting like you are a Nas fan who saw the dude rise and fall. Stop acting like Nas shitted on Rakim when everybody knows it was the other way around [who did a tribute for who?] Stop acting like Damien Marley is some god awful hack of an artist.

I can’t name a great MC who would call Nas a failure, who wouldn’t acknowledge him at worst as a legend and at best as the GOAT. The MCs themselves could tell you this much. But you still wouldn’t accept it.

The Nas haters these days might as well be the bitches trying to reach into his pockets. Shit makes you want to get back on some old high school shit, punching bitches in the face JUST FOR LIVING. Like P said

      ONE

    35. I say we all start a petition of a Nas & AZ album not these Common, NAS & Q-Tip

Nas should get it, we want NAS & AZ album

Is Nas scared of being out rhymed by AZ?

Doesn’t he know he gotta beta chemistry with AZ than anyone in the game?

Lets start a petition ya’ll – the fans, the media including Hip Hop DX, All Hip Hop, Real Talk Ny, XXL, Miss Info, The Source and every other hip hop news site

we tired of Nas linking with other musicians for collabo albums, we want that Nas/ AZ album, its 20yrs overdue damn…..its like Detox

fuck a Nas/Common/Q-tip collabo, the streets, the ears want Nas & AZ, where is logic in Nas?

      1. slow your role you act like it’s Nas and a couple scrubs, stop bitchin and be pumped that 3 of the greatest on the mic are forming a group together

      2. lol, ayit man no stress…then maybe they should add AZ to the group – but an Nas & AZ group, just the two of ’em is overdue – if they were to re-assemble The Firm, they can just replace Foxy with Lauryn Hill –

I think these are the list of rappers/ mc’s Nas is compatible with

        -Killah Priest
        -Canibus
        -Ras Kass
        -Pharoah Monch
        -Common
        -AZ
        -Talib Kweli
        -Mos Def
        -the late Tupac
        -Lauryn Hill

        -just my opinion 🙂

    36. Well I guess the NaS/AZ album is like Crooked I’s official debut album at this point….. Even Detox is more likely at this point..
