De La Soul’s member Maseo recently spoke at Los Angeles’ Red Bull Music Academy event. The veteran deejay and producer alluded to an upcoming solo project. “I’m working on a project called DJ Conductor, where I’m producing new artists and my friends that I’ve been wanting to work with for a long time,” said the Brooklyn, New York native in parts of the Red Bull interview exclusively published by HipHopDX. “I’ve got songs with KRS-One, got a song with Freddie Foxxx, got a song with Mac Miller, Fashawn, a couple of cats that I’m inspired by, and I’m finally doing something that I’ve been needing to do for a long time.”
Having made records for over 20 years, Mase added, “The new talent always drives me; it’s always been the thing that drives me.”
However, Maseo entered the game as a student of Prince Paul, who juggled the late 1980s and early 1990s as a member of Stetsasonic and producing (along with Maseo) De La Soul‘s first three albums. Maseo confirmed that the producer and trio are indeed reuniting, “Of course, we’re making a De La [Soul] album with Prince Paul. I’m in a good place with where things are.”
Maseo recalled Paul’s advice early in the protege’s career as, “Have experiences that I haven’t with this hip hop thing and number two, turn around and do the same thing for somebody else that I’m doing for you.”
