J. Cole Talks International Markets, Sophomore Album

BET’s Jabari Johnson recently caught up with Roc Nation star J. Cole while on tour with Tinie Tempah in the United Kingdom. During the interview, Cole spoke on his cross-country appeal and the importance of showing love to his international fan base. He said that the Internet has made the world a smaller place, so it’s important to him to treat his international fans to as many live performances as his American audience.

“It’s very important because these days…the Internet makes the world smaller,” Cole explained. “[Europe and Asia are] as big market[s] – more fans, more opportunity, more business, more longevity [as an artist]…it gives you more longevity and security in your career.”

Cole also spoke on his as-of-yet untitled sophomore LP, which he says will be in stores by 2012. He explained that he wants to one-up his recent studio debut Cole World: The Sideline Story with his second go-around, and that for himself it’s all about artistic evolution.

“[I’m aiming my next album for] next year, definitely next year,” he said. “Summertime, end of summer, maybe. I’m not gonna call it, but that’s what I’m shooting for…I [want to] have it be way better than [Cole World: The Sideline Story]…I just want to keep evolving.”

    1. Dont put any fucking songs that you released for free two years ago either nigga. Cole World had too many songs from the mixtapes.

      1. How could he possibly have left songs as good as Lights Please and In The Morning off the album? There are a lot of people that have never heard the mixtapes that haven’t heard those songs before.

Lights Please is timeless, it’s one of the best hip hop songs ever made. If that’s not album worthy then I don’t know what is, even if he released it 5 years ago.

And In The Morning? Easily the most radio friendly track with the most hit potential, it would be stupid not to include it.

    2. NO MATTER WHAT J COLE DO HE WILL NEVER BE AS GOOD AS DRIZZY. J COLE WILL ALWAYS BE THE LIGHTSKIN NIGGA WHO OPEN FOR DRAKE AND RIHANNA

      1. i feel sorry for you…you came to hate thats no debate..whats more funny is drake and j cole are cool did songs together..

      2. ur stupid as fuck!!! u clearly judge how good a rapper is by the level of production, lyrically, drake is no where near

    3. INTERNATIONAL MARKET MAKES SENSE BECAUSE IN THE USA WE LIKE REAL HIP HOP EVERY WHERE ELSE ITS JUST R&B SO J COLE WILL FIT IN

      1. well he is better at rapping then producing so i would say the opposite and have somebody else make his beats.

    4. shut this website down, y’all feed the trolls too much.
j cole remind me of a mix between nas and kanye, he got alotta potential.

      1. did you say nas. i did not see any bit of nas aggressiveness on cole world at all, gods gift came closest, and thats in my opinion the best song on the album. So please stop saying nas.

      2. negro please….that boy ain’t nowhere near that level and never will be.

i guess if someone doesn’t like what you like, then that means they are a troll? stfu with that stupid ass shit.

    5. Drake outsold Jay Cole. Wayne outsold Jay Z. and where Jay Electronica at? YMCMB betta den Jay Nation. fuck Jay West fuck Jay Jordan fuck Jay Willow. YOUNG MONEY WE DA BEST. swag

      1. Your soooo simple minded its sad. Everyone on YMCMB isnt on Roc Nations level. Never will be. Birdman purchased all those albums your talking about and if you need proof go outside your place and hear what people are playing in there cars. Its not them!!! I have a place in Jersey and NYC, and I hear people playing watch the throne. Everyday!

      2. birdman din’t purchase shit.Kids with no musical memories did because that’s the most heavily promoted label in the game, but yea in the long run roc nation is going to get bigger.people forget that it was founded only in 2008

      3. that’s where you fucked up…you listenin’ to what people playin’ in their cars, the YMCMB fan base isn’t even old enough to drive. Nobody’s gonna bump drake wit the windows down (maybe females), and any nigga that actually OWNS a nicki cd isn’t going to play it in the whip…they’ll do it when they’re home in private ol’ trapped in the closet ass niggas.

      4. cash money records has been around for 20 years and they own half of young money records. obviously they know what the fuck they are doing.

      5. “the YMCMB fan base isn’t even old enough to drive”

Lol this can’t be anymore true,i see kid with those YM shirts, they gotta be at least 10, the oldest at most 13. The only people above the age of 17 buying these albums from drake, nicki minaj, and lil wayne r either tools or females

    6. jcole is the type of artist grake should hve been….but drake decided to go full rnb….jcoles club songs are even lyrical…jcole is the future.

      1. if cole could sing, he would’ve been singing to. he doesn’t have any soul to his music, which is why he wack 2 me.

      1. truly, and i own all albums, first time i heard him was a like a day or two after the warm up dropped, so hyped for his album but damn.

      2. Not at atll to me it’s

The Warm Up>Cole World>Friday Night Lights>The Come Up

Don’t see how The Come Up is better than Cole World to be honest.

    7. I see that Jay Z and Sony are trying to build a fake frenzy again. The public can see through that fake stuff, that’s why he didn’t go platinum lol.

    8. j.cole is the future! best album of 2011. He knows what he is talking about regarding 50. Would be a dope joint 50 & j.cole.

    9. WORST RAPPERS OF 2011 (SOUTHERN MAINSTREAM RAPPERS)
      5)RICK ROSS
      4)GUCCI MANE
      3)LIL WAYNE
      2)YELAWOLF
      1)J COLE

WHY PUT J COLE #1 BECAUSE IN EVERY WAY HE WROTE AND PRODUCED THE WORST ALBUM I EVER HEARD SURE THERE’S WORSE OUT THEN THIS BUT NONE ARE AS DRY AND BORING AS A GROWN BOY CRYING OVER THE TRACK LIKE A ANOTHER DRAKE FAG

      1. THE BEST MUSIC OF 2011 (SINCE IM SUCH A HATER)
        5)SIR MIKEY ROCKS
        4)PHONTE (THE BEST FROM NC)
        3)BIG KRIT
        2)TECH N9NE (THE BEAST)
        1)BUN B (THE KING)

NOW GO LISTEN TO SOME REAL MUSIC BITCHS

    10. Everyone is entitled to and opinion, but some people shouldnt comment because of the ignorant shit they say. If theres nothing good to say about an artist who is unique as J.Cole you “Haters” should seal your lips and listen to your genre and stop trying to shit on a artist who is truly great in Hip-Hop/Rap community. “You hated it before you played I already forgave you”-J.Cole. @Texas you call yourself a bun b and big krit fun I cant talk. You seem like one of those simple minded niggas who enjoy the bullshit ass punchline flow. Listen deeper music has to have a meaning not mindless lyrics and a hot beat. Real rap is back.

      1. J. Cole is a good rapper, but damn, his music IS fucking boring and his album is a snoozefest, no way around it. Other rappers with content like him accomplish it to stay entertaining.

    11. cole is dope but he definitely threw me off with the album. i mean don’t get me wrong it had some substance and was a good album but he wasn’t as clever or hard hitting with the lyrics as he was with his previous bodies of work. i personally feel like friday night lights should’ve been the album. it was perfect. the warm up was a classic mixtape, “i get up” alone was best shit i heard in awhile. the come up was a classic as well. cole was so hungry on there. cole world was good but knowing cole’s capabilities it could have been wayyy better.
