There are alot of maybes in the mixtape world, and as history has taught us, anything can happen. This past weekend Kid Cudi decided to drop “Rap Hard” out of left field. The mixtape features some B-sides, rarities, and previously unreleased material that the Cudster has been hiding in his skinny jeans for a few years. If you’ve never heard it, it’s new to you, so why not? It’s crazy to think that Kid Cudi is no longer part of the “new” class in Hip Hop. There are, however, some new kids on the block that may move into star territory fairly quickly. Nitty Scott, MC comes through with “Doobies & Popsicle Sticks.” After making a presence in this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards cypher, Nitty brings a Summer vibe to the Fall on her new mix. Meanwhile, Slim the Mobster shows and proves on “War Music.” As yet another protégé of Dr. Dre, Slim got the ultimate co-sign from the Detoxic producer by having him on the cut “Back Against the Wall.”
This week, Fred the Godson brings “City Of God.” The God has been teasing with a few cuts, the most recent being the Pusha T featured “Doves Fly.” Then, Ludacris channels Doc Brown with “1.21 Gigawatts: Back To the First Time.” Not too much has changed going forward – Triple Cs’ Gunplay announced “Bogota” for November 24th, J-Hood’s hash tagged “#Nohandouts” for December 5th, and Phil Ade’s hash tagged “#PhilAdeFridays Vol. 2” on December 30th. Let’s not forget Waka’s collaborative “Lockout” mixtape with French Montana on December 9th.
Limbo is the dance for real in mixtapes. Drake just dropped Take Care, Rick Ross is bringing God Forgives, I Don’t, and both will come together for a mixtape called “Y.O.L.O.” Young Buck’s “Bond Money” jumped back on the radar, so perhaps that will make a surprise appearance soon. Asher Roth originally was naming his mixtape “Paps & Jazz” but now it’s “Pabst & Jazz.” Roth went from shouting out the paparazzi to homaging PBR, so things have changed. A recent leak off that one is the Blended Babies produced “Common Knowledge” – definitely worth a listen. Cassidy dropped the song “I Get It In” last week and announced “I Get It In 3” will be coming. In addition, No Limit’s forefather Master P gears for “TMZ (Too Many Zeros)” and B.o.B. gets a mixtape title in the form of “E.P.I.C.” None of these have even soft release dates, but anything is possible.
