Jay-Z recent spoke on his collaborative release with Kanye West, Watch the Throne, explaining that the release is intended to help sustain the culture. Speaking with 99 Jamz’s Lorenzo Thomas a few days ago, Hov explained that he didn’t bow to popular trends to launch his latest LP.
“No super over-the-top, big singing chorus or anything,” he said. “That’s how we launched our album. And it’s good that it’s been embraced the way it has. That means everyone’s ready for that. The return of the boom-bap.”
He also justified the audacious album title, explaining that he was just asserting Hip Hop’s influence on society through his music.
“It’s just protecting the music and the culture. It’s people that’s in the forefront of the music. Watch the Throne, you protect it. You just watch how popular music shift, and just how Hip Hop basically replaced rock and roll as the youth music. The same thing can happen to Hip Hop. It can be replaced by other forms of music. So we making sure that we put the effort into making the best product so we can contend with all this other music, with all the dance music that’s dominating the charts right now and indie Music that’s dominating the festivals.”

Some rappers make great tracks and go hard on them, but few can make great albums, from start to finish all 16 work. Diverse beats,good lyrics equals good work. Not for the younger crowd because you have to listen to the lyrics which is half of the enjoyment of WTT.

Now KRS has a upcoming album with Primo called “Return of The Boom Bip.” The culture has taken a slap in the face from many artist, who proclaim one thing, but do another (using it as a crutch, etc). Now Jay started out on that culture hip-hop style, boom bap (Reasonable Doubt), but as he blew up, he went in another direction sort of. With the corporate world behind everything he does, he’s obligated to do a few things. Otis is a tight song, but boom bap isn’t defined by just a sample and back to back rhyming, that’s just a cipher, which is cool, and traditional on the corner emceeing. However, we know the whole album isn’t on that vibe (how many DJs are used to cut on the album if any at all). The hip-hop definition along with now “the thought of boom bap” definition is and has been retooled, because of who is using it and saying it. Now if they wanted to do a Boom Bap album, the music would have came from cats like Pete Rock, Primo, DJ Scratch, Q-Tip, Eric Sermon, Showbiz, etc and guest would have been cats like Rakim, Kool G, Kane, Skillz, Black Thought, Jean Grae, De La, Nas (Illmatic version), etc. I will say cool album, because it is, but not on the boom bap vibe; just another good album by Jay and Kanye doing what they do on a collab effort. If Jay wants to do boom bap, he would do another version of “Friend or Foe.” Kanye has never been a boom bap track maker and sometimes his name exceeds his skill level as far as tracks; mix downs are excellent though.

I dont think mafuckers know what boom bap is. Its a term that was given to the style of drum breaks hip-hop producers used to use in their beats. The boom is the kick drum and the bap is the snare.

And then Eminem signs them!! And the UNDERGROUND SCENE is back with dudes like Jay Elect, Black Hippy, KRIT, GIBBS, KENDRICK, and Fashawn no thanks to Jay who is in the proces of trying to sabotage J Cole’s career So WTF is JAY TALKIN ABOUT?? Son did DEATH OF AUTOTUNE on his last album which was sort of a “SWAGGER JACKIN” of Nas’s HHD but whatever and then on Watch THe Throne what do i hear??
