L.A. Reid is one the most successful music executives of the last quarter century. He has been involved in the signing and development of several huge stars, including Mariah Carey, TLC, Usher, Rihanna and more. He founded his own label, LaFace, with producer and songwriter Babyface, which all Hip Hop fans should be thankful for as that imprint released records from two of the South’s greatest groups, Outkast and Goodie Mob, among others. With a track record like that its news whenever Reid makes a move, or even if he just hints at one, which is what he has just done.
After serving as the CEO of Island/Def Jam for the past seven years he left that position and will now serve as co-host on Simon Cowell’s new reality show, X-Factor. But Reid has no plans to stay away from the executive side of the music industry. He has now begun to hint at a new position with a new label that he will begin, in his words, “in a little while.” He stated that on Angie Martinez’s Hot 97 radio show yesterday. What he said, in full, was, “Listen, I’m nobody’s fool, I didn’t give up my day job. I just left, I had to leave Universal Music Group and try my hat on someplace else, that we’ll announce, well… we’ll announce that in a little while.”
He continued, “You’re not done with me yet. I’m telling you the truth: I have not been shipped off to TV land. I am a record executive and I shall be right there in your face with my records.” DX will update you as soon as Reid makes an announcement regarding his future career plans.
