The new semester at Rice University may have just begun, but the experimental course taught by Religious Studies Professor Dr. Anthony Pinn and HERE distinguished lecturer/rapper Bun B is looking to be an early success.

According to My Fox Houston, the class size for their “Religion & Hip Hop Culture” course has doubled to 250 students since the beginning of the semester. And while the increase in attention may be because of Bun B’s celebrity status, the Port Author native sees this as a chance to teach tomorrow’s generation a valuable lesson in cultural principles. “This is the perfect opportunity for 1: to bridge the gaps between religion and hip hop. 2: alter the perception of Hip Hop in the community and 3: enlighten people here on Rice University’s grounds,” he said.

In other news, Los Angeles rapper Ice Cube will be performing a free concert as part of the 2010/2011 Winter Dew Tour on February 11.
