SRC Records, home to Akon, Asher Roth and Wu-Tang Clan has long been distributed by the Universal Music Group. The label’s founder, Steve Rifkind, is best known for his 1990s establishment of Loud Records, which released classic albums by Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, dead prez and others. Billboard.com has reported that Rifkind, known as a pioneer for modern street team marketing, has extended his deal with Universal for three years.
Rifkind confirmed the extension via Twitter, noting that “It’s time to get to work.” In the last five years, SRC has released 8 Diagrams by Wu-Tang Clan, Asleep In The Bread Aisle by Asher Roth, and Desire by Pharoahe Monch. The label is expected to release Roth’s sophomore album this year, and confirmed to have signed former Immature front-man Ray J.
Previously, Ray J was signed to Koch/E1 Entertainment, where he released two albums and a compilation.
