Joell Ortiz Says He’s Officially A “Free Agent,” Leaves E1 Entertainment

Brooklyn, New York emcee Joell Ortiz has been with E1 Entertainment (f/k/a Koch Records) for over three years. That ended yesterday, according to Ortiz’s Twitter. With his second official solo album, Free Agent planned for release on November 30, the emcee said the title may be true of his recording industry status.

Joell signed to the label in 2007, after leaving Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment after a year-plus tenure. Soon after signing, Ortiz released The Brick: Bodega Chronicles, which featured production from Alchemist and Showbiz. Last year, Ortiz also joined Joe Budden, Crooked I and Royce Da 5’9″ in releasing Slaughterhouse, the group of the same name’s first release.

HipHopDX spoke with E1 yesterday, and the label did say that Free Agent is still planned for November 30 release.

    1. Something fishy is going on with the whole Slaughterhouse crew. Except for Crooked I, he’s just over there doing his thing.

    2. This dude is too talented to be in limbo..Kanye should snatch him up..instead of dudes like kid cocaine and cyhi do prince..Joell always brings that heat..oh yeah first

    3. Joell is to smart for the industry.

In otherwords, like many other smart MC’s who can string words together in a coherent song are too intelligent for rap right now.

The lables only want minstel show nuckas who will talk nonsense, which only serves to “zombiefy” the masses of black kids who listen to that garbage.

Its sad when real talent is constantly overlooked for no other reason than the “stupidfication” of the masses.

After 13yrs of terrible music..people are waking up…which is why sales are down.

      Good Luck Joell Ortiz…

    4. He should sign with a label that can give what he wants and needs, and also manage to put his records out. Major labels are a bunch of bullshit people who serve shit to people thinking that’s what they want, and if the artist can’t hit gold and keep up with appearance they will be drop unlike the indies at least they keep trying with ya.

    5. Will someone please give this man a legitimate fucking deal? Is everyone’s fucking head stuck to far up Drake/Wayne/Minaj’s ass to see a fucking franchise here?! Lyrically this man is a fucking BEAST! With the right team behind him, his potential is limitless……..DRE FUCKED UP BIG TIME LETTING THIS GUY GO!

      1. I agree. This dude is way too nice!! He shoulda been had a legitimate deal… Hope Free Agent doesn’t get pushed back…again. Cant wait any longer for that!!!

    6. good thing he left at the right moment. EMI/E1 might be taken over by citigroup, which will probably be bought by warner which means alot of artist on the backburner for a while.

    7. they just recorded a song with eminem a few days ago…that probably will be the official introduction to the shady team
