At October 2ndâs BET Hip Hop Awards show rising star Nicki Minaj was honored with three awards, âRookie of the Year,â
âMade You Look Style Award,â and âFavorite by Fans,â while Young Money labelmate Drake snagged the coveted âMVP of the Yearâ prize. Other big winners at the Atlanta held ceremony included Waka Flocka Flame producer Lex Luger, who won âTrack of the Yearâ for Rick Rossâ âBlowinâ Money Fast (B.M.F.)â and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys whose smash hit âEmpire State of Mindâ was given the âPerfect Combo Award.âÂ
One of the nightâs biggest moments was the reunion of The Diplomats. For the first time in years the Harlem Rap collective, represented by main members Camâron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, and Freekey Zeekey made a televised appearance together. Â
The show also featured performances by Big Boi, Yelawolf, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, and a show opening performance by Diddy and Rick Ross of the aforementioned âB.M.F.â and âMC Hammer,â which culminated in a surprise appearance by early 1990s Rap legend MC Hammer who then went on to perform his hit 1991 â2 Legit 2 Quit.â
Once again the annual ceremonyâs cyphers were crowd pleasers with G.O.O.D Music cypher, led by Kanye West and featuring Pusha T, Common, and Big Sean being the apparent favorite of the fans in attendance.
