Rapper Rhymefest has decided that he will be running for political office in his hometown of Chicago.
The renowned freestyler, who won a Grammy Award for co-writing Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks,” revealed to SOHH.com that he would be making a formal announcement around October 15.
Rhymefest, born Che Smith, has yet to reveal what political office seat he is pursuing.
The announcement comes weeks after Wyclef Jean withdrew from the Presidential race in Haiti. (October 2)
UPDATE: It has now been confirmed by The Onion’s AV Club that Rhymefest is specifically running for 20th Ward Alderman. The formal candidacy announcement is expected to be made this Thursday at the Exclusively Yours Auto Spa in Washington Park. The following video was released hinting at the announcement:
Earlier this year, Rhymefest released his second album, El Che.

Make The Movement happen!!!!! It’s been real!!!!!!!
fuck comparing this to wyqueef and his disillusioned embarassing heaving of himself into the political game. running haiti, what the fuck was running through his head. rhymefest trying to do something local makes a lot more sense and is a much more plausible idea (like, something could actually happen)
I think it’s a good thing he’s reaching back to his community to lift others up and progress as a community. If people, especially our culture (black) embraced each other more often we would help each other reach our goals together. Good luck Rhymefest and keep up the good work.
