Oakland rapper and poet Ise Lyfe has announced that he will release his debut book later this summer. The written work, titled Pistols & Prayers, consists of a collection of his poetry, short essays, journal entries, and lyrics compiled over the years. Lyfe’s camp described the book to be “a compelling glimpse into the author’s coming of age as a man, an artist, and an advocate for social change.”
“I’m glad to be an author who is also a Hip Hop artist,” said Ise Lyfe, whose style is said to be reminiscent of artists like Mos Def and Talib Kweli. “It puts me in a space to rep for Hip Hop from two different spaces.”
The young poet, who is also an activist, is recognized for competing in poetry slam competitions, appearing on Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam on HBO, and sharing the stage with several artist like Dead Prez, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill.
Pistols & Prayers will release on July 20.
