Fresh off hiatus after the birth of her son, M.I.A takes to Complex Magazine as the cover girl for their June/July issue. With her third album ///Y/ lined up for a July 13 release date, she talked to Complex about the Internet’s democratizing qualities, the difference between print media in England and the US and surreality of Nas and Jay-Z’s current relationship in light of their high-profile beef a decade ago. She also talked about why she declined to tour with Kanye West, who sampled her ’07 hit “Paper Planes” on his collaboration with Jay-Z, T.I. and Lil’ Wayne “Swagger Like Us.”
“[I declined the tour offer] because I was pregnant,” she told Complex. “I know Kanye makes it out to be this big thing, like, ‘She dissed me when I asked her to do a song.’ Then he was like, ‘Then you said no to me and my tour.’ I was about to have a baby! But I love Kanye, I think he’s been super-consistent, everything he’s done has been good. I like his interaction with the media, too—he’s just him, and he’s living it.”
