Among the long list of artists and celebrity figures that were nominated for a BET Award earlier this week, Justin Bieber’s inclusion for the “Best New Artist” category caught some by surprise. Voicing his approval, Sean “Diddy” Combs defended the pop star’s spot on the list.

“The awards are important to Hip Hop and to show [Hip Hop artists] in the right light,” he said during a network press conference. “But the beauty of BET is, if Justin Bieber’s hot, then he deserves to be on that stage. Sometimes, at other award shows, the color of your skin or the type of music you make takes away from getting the accolade you deserve.”

The BET Awards will air live June 27 at 8:00 p.m. on BET.

In other news, Miami rapper Rick Ross recently spoke to MTV about the collaborative track with Jay-Z on his fourth studio album Teflon Don.

Though the title of the record is still unnamed, Ross went into detail on how Hov’s verse came about while on the road in Las Vegas for the Blueprint 3 Tour. “I played the track and my first verse in a [Playstation 3] behind the stage. I played it, and he listened to it. We backed it up, played it again. We backed it up, played it again. We backed it up, and he spit his verse.”

Capturing the moment for a DVD that will accompany the deluxe edition release of Teflon Don, Ross continued, “I think it’s gonna be magic for people to see Jay do his ‘Rain [Man]’ when he’s rubbing his head, like he pulling his rhymes out his mind. Just to see somebody come up with a verse that potent in less than two or three minutes, cause it was only a snippet. The beat may have played for a minute and a half and started over.”

Rick Ross’ Teflon Don will be released July 6 on Maybach Music Group/Def Jam Records.
