Early this morning, Marion “Suge” Knight was arrested in the greater Los Angeles area, reports TMZ.com. The Death Row Records co-founder, and executive producer behind nearly a dozen platinum albums from Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound and others was apprehended while driving.
In addition to charges of assualt involving a firearm, Knight was reportedly driving with a suspended license. There is no word yet if the initial charges stem from a late March super-market robbery, said to have involved Luniz rapper Yukmouth. At that time, Knight was wanted by police.
According to reports, Knight remains in custody, with a bail set of $65,000 $60,000.

UPDATE: CNN reported Friday that Knight’s $60,000 bail was posted. The onetime music mogul’s attorney, Marc Brummer, said, “He’s innocent, 100 percent,” Marc Brumer told CNN in a phone interview. “Suge Knight is a businessman. He is not a person who would carry a gun or flash a gun at anybody. That’s not Suge Knight.”
Knight was arrested late Wednesday night after police were told he aimed a gun at a man. Authorities later stopped Knight’s Cadillac Escalade in Gardena, California, where he was also found to have a suspended license.
Less than two days later, Knight’s attorney believes the alleged victim should be charged with false accusations. “There was never a gun found,” Brumer said. “He was very cooperative, answered all the questions police had, and we just feel that he shouldn’t have been arrested.”

I will agree that to a large degree, the criminal justice system is an economical cycle that thrives upon incarcerating poor (mostly black and brown) prisoners for non-violent drug charges. If drugs were decriminalized, our prison and jail populations would shrink, resulting in a loss of jobs in law enforcement, and many other civilian jobs (penitentiary and jail employees, court reporters, clerical staff, bail bonds, lawyers, etc.). The US wastes an incredible amount of money “fighting the war on drugs” which is a useless battle. But, it’s a war that’s necessary, because as sad as it is, incarcerating people is good for the economy.
