In its 7th year, VH1’s Hip Hop Honors will continue celebrating important movements in the culture during this year’s Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South. This year, the show will have some southern comfort as it celebrates contributions made by southern artists in the game. Jermaine “JD” Dupri, Luther “Luke” Campbell and his 2 Live Crew will be among many celebrated by the VH1 show this year.
Aside from Luke and JD, Master P, Organized Noize, and Rap-A-Lot’s J Prince will be honored with performances by Bun B, Lil Jon, Paul Wall, T-Pain, Trina, Pitbull and more.
This year will not see Tracy Morgan as the show’s host with Honors opting for Craig Robinson instead. Fans may remember him from Hot Tub Time Machine, Pineapple Express and The Office.
Lee Rolontz, the Executive Vice President, Original Music Production and Development over at VH1 said it was important to concentrate on a specific region for this year’s show.
“In order to continue our efforts to honor the best in hip hop, it is so important that we recognize the South and the tremendous impact that it has had on hip hop music. The southern experience is one that is unique to America and while filled with its own testimony of trials and triumphs, hip hop has served as a universal medium where the journey is shared. Some of the most popular current Hip Hop artists are from The South. Our honorees opened the door for the southern story to be told, and it is one that continues to resonate with all people all over the world,” Rolontz said.
The show may be celebrating southern acts but it will still be held at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. It will air on Monday June 7, at 9:00PM EST on the VH1 network.
man what the fuck ya’ll are damn slow on here i used to like this site but its gone down hill, use keep on posting alot of old news the past few months
im not watching this shit.
This year Vh1 will honor the death of Hip Hop.
NO DOUBT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
INOA.. You right son..
i know the south has proven to have some dope rappers. i don’t hate the south. but it’s still mostly garbage and i couldn’t give a shit about any of those names except Bun B.
i mean… Scarface and Outkast are really the only southerners who are worthy of an award, and they’re not even up there
How could VH1 do this? What they need to do is honor any or all the buroughs in NY or even just honor Guru and all the great rappers that past before us…who paved the way for these parasites. Yeah Scarface…dope….Bun B…OG….Outkast….innovative…..Luda…tight… but the rest aren’t doing shit…oooo Lil’ Wayne all of a sudden learned how to write syllables so he is a top tier emcee…???…get the hell outta here! Master P sounds like he is literally pushing a load out his ass when he raps…Paul Wall…sounds and looks like the dude that bagged my Walmart purchases last night….Luke is trash…Jermaine Dupri…without the emcees rapping on his records he wouldn’t on even come close to janet’s coochi. This is wicked shitty for hip-hop…vh1 are some real scumbags for doing this sorry just venting…call me a bloggalame but it’s true.
This show jumped the shark ladies and germs.
Where the flying fuck is Scarface.
where is Outkast and Scarface or the Geto Boys
for reals!!! … Outkast still the shit ahaha
outkast declined being honored
I like how the NY cats are mad, but when we say yeah i remember Guru or Kool G Rap they say…you dont know nothing about that. 430pm everyday after school rapcity, i was listen like you were. but now they wanna say thank you guys downsouth you like….naw dont do that…hatters never die. show respect CAKE.
WTF!?!?!?!?…. VH1 Don’t Know Shit About HipHop… No Scareface, No OutKast… Not Even T.I…. These Ma’Fuckas Is Crazy
Fuck ti
I’m curious as to how the ratings for this show will be. Personally, locality doesn’t matter to me. I wouldn’t be against listening to an artist because they are from the South or any other region for that matter. However, I must be honest, the bulk of my favorite artist I like are not from the South.
The show should include the following artists:
8Ball & MJG
Geto Boys (particularly Scarface)
Killer Mike
Little Brother
Ludaris
Outkast
T.I.
Three 6 Mafia
Young Jeezy
I’m sure I left some talented people out, but that’s just off the top of my head. Of course it would have been helpful if Lil’ Wayne could be present but that won’t happen.
Little Brother? um yeah bro, them dudes might be from the south but there’s nothing southern about their music. Them dudes straight up Midwest/NYC Dope Real Hip Hop….
Outkast is the only group you mentioned that deserves to be mentioned.
Luda maybe..
WHAT NO Z-RO HES FROM THE SOUTH
HAHA look at all yall haters
new york is irrelevant
if NY is irrelevant then hiphop is irrelevant
SORRY BUT WITHOUT OUTKAST THE SOUTH WOULD NOT BE RELEVENT.
truth
THIS SHOW IS FALLING OFF.
If you don’t get OutKast, Goodie Mob, Geto Boys, UGK, then don’t do the dirty south.
FUCK VH1
Dear Fans,
We at Vh-1 would like to address the issue of the Southern HipHop Honors that we will be recording in the near future. Our intention was to honor more New York rappers for our upcoming awards show but due to the fact that most are broke and could not obtain a day off from there current low paying jobs we decided to think outside the box and listen to our target audience for once.
why do yall hate us so much just cause we from the south and grown up listenin to 8balln mjg and outkast to tip luda and cashmoney you think are shit is wack… well most of yall shit sound wack to us but we dont be hatin
Man VH1 truely dropped the ball with this one I’m not too much 4 J.D hip hop wise more of an R&B dude to me….J.Prince of course bekuz everybody knw Lil’ Jay run the south he’s the reason we got Geto Boys, UGK, Z-Ro, Devin the Dude….fuck what u think about Master P now what that nigga did with No Limit records was unheard of I remember a different No Limit cd droppin every week, now what about DJ Screw, Outkast, 8ball & MJG, & U.G.K ?? Back in 2001 or whenever, when THE DIRTY SOUTH started hitting the radio, that’s when I stopped listening to the radio and haven’t listened to it since.
yo on some real shit, i dont want to sound like a hater, but the dirty south movement played a major role in the downfall of hiphop. Once the south was getting bigger the rap game starting dying. Just my opinion, dont go all crazy on me. Im aware theres SOME talented niggas from the south, but like 98percent are GARBAGE.
Right On Point son.. True That..
Got sum talented artists coming out right now tho. I guess
Its ok…its true. These are sound a like, act a like and ignorant mafuggs that ruined the game. Sellout…pickininni gold tooth fools who have no idea what the english language is…
Calling me a hater is not gonna hide the facts…dirty south rappers = Coon , step-n-fetchit…dummies….
Furthermore…
Let me say that cats like…Little Brother, Luda, Outkast, Supastition, Justus League.. these cats are not in the same category as the step-n-fethcit cats..
Coon Rappers…
Jeezy, TI, Lil Wayne, Cash Money, Soulja Boy…Mad Coon…!!
Coon music..lol
The Death Of Hip Hop
^ That is my prediction on the fans respond during this show.
ick, there are so many other artists that could be honored before the south. This is pretty lame and I don’t even care this year, usually I am pretty excited for this show! Don’t hate either because that is only my opinion. Hip-Hop was born in New York and it will forever be the best from there.
this is bullshit…there so much southern dudes that are better and deserve this…fuckin outkast…wow…
Fuck the south. Bunch of look-alike, sound-alike bum fucks. ALL of them except luda n outkast.period
master p, geto boys, outkast, ugk, ball & g, luke should be the only ones getting honoered.
i graduated high school in 1997 and this was around the time hip hop was still hip hop. I am from the south but i was always a Nas Jay Z Biggie type of nigga. Outkast was the only group besides goodie who came later who represented the south the way it should. Damn i miss the 90’s
I’m from Georgia and a fan of the hip-hop honors, but the “whole dirty south”
C’MON SON GET OUTTA HERE WITH THAT BULLSHIT!! i’ve read some of the comments and i agree, it should have been Geto Boys, UGK, Outkast, and the rappers and the producers who put the south on the map. Currently the south is at a stand still, theres a few but not many rappers who represent the south well.
P.S, For those of you who like Plies “KILL YO SELF”
how are Outkast and UGK not getting love, or the ghetto boys, or goodie mobb, seriously what the fuck
or 8 ball and mjg for that matter
check your facts vh1
I understand including artists from different regions but i think it would’ve made more sense if when they started the show starting from the beginning of hip hop and move along the timeline..they didnt really but whatever…
If you’re gonna honor southern artists..Outkast is the obvious choice..their career spans almost 2 decades they’ve won grammys, and made people respect the south as ARTISTS..not just business men as in the case with Master P (though even that I KINDA sorta understand.) The performers aren’t as diverse as they were before..its kinda catered to one segment of hip hop..if they had outkast or Geto Boys, Goodie Mob, Timbaland or the Neptunes (VA is the south too) they woulda had a bigger audience..
Man you can’t just have a one show for the south. There are all kinds of stats in da south that are huge I’ve been always been jammin Houston cats and Memphis people from my gat in the early 90’s. they should be doing it state by state Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, damm there are like 13 states in the South that need their own 2 hour show to honor that state and I’m on the west coast and right is right
they can have everybody thats dope from the south the show is only an hour long…..relax
Man i hope they honor Z-RO
this youtube video shows how much we bang Z-RO
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNqgR4ozbL8&NR=1
It don’t surprise that this year’s honors was gon’ be sum bullshit. Now Master P., Luke and Timbaland, I give VH1 credit for honoring them; but come on now. Geto Boys, Outkast, and UGK should have been honored. Not to mention Arrested Development. I know that Arrested Development ain’t the type of hip hop group that people go crazy over, but they’re from the south too and they paved the way for everybody else in Atlanta. Other than that FUCK this year’s honors.
