Ice Cube Shares His Pick For ‘Best Diss Song In The History Of Hip Hop’

Ice Cube may or may not be biased, but his vote for best diss song in the history of Hip Hop goes to his very own “No Vaseline.”

The legendary rapper made the declaration to the crowd at a recent show, as talk of diss tracks are high among the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef.

“‘No Vaseline’ is the best diss song in the history of Hip Hop, and I’ll tell you why,” Cube said of the infamous N.W.A diss. “One MC, myself, I took out four muthafuckas and their manager. You can’t beat that. You can’t beat that.

“But we did that over 30 years ago, so as it stands today, I got nothing but love for N.W.A, okay? Nothing but love for Dr. Dre, nothing but love for MC Ren, DJ Yella, Eazy-E rest in peace.”

This isn’t a new sentiment for the West Coast native.

Last year during a conversation with DJ Whoo Kid, Ice Cube scoffed at a ranking of the “Most Unforgettable Diss Tracks in Hip Hop History,” by The Root, in which “No Vaseline” was listed in third place while 2Pac’s “Hit ‘Em Up” sat in the number one spot.

“How’s 2Pac number one when he needed help on that record?” questioned Cube, referring to the fact that The Outlawz rap on the song as well. “Me, ‘No Vaseline,’ one MC. I love Nas but it’s not,” he quickly segued as the host interjected to inform him of who occupied second place: Nas with “Ether.”

“Took out four n-ggas and the manager. I mean, damn! Got to give me credit for that,” he continued. “[The] group was over. I don’t know if they made another record after that. So, nah man. Sorry!”

Ice Cube’s comments received backup from his peers on social media as people began to chime in after a clip from his interview resurfaced via The Art of Dialogue on Twitter.

Fellow Cali rapper Glasses Malone showed a united front with the Straight Outta Compton MC, saying: “agreed top 3 diss records of all time 1. no vaseline 2. ether 3. hit me up.”

Snoop Dogg agreed with Cube too.

“Hands down, he does. Nothing comes close,” Tha Doggfather said on Instagram in response to a similar comment Cube made earlier in the year. DJ Tony Neal, the founder of the Core DJs collective, also agreed with the assessment. “Nothing close except for ‘Hit ‘Em Up,’” he said.

Released in October 1991, “No Vaseline” appeared on Ice Cube’s second solo album Death Certificate. Dr. Dre left N.W.A shortly after its release, leading to the dissolution of the group.

    1. They didn’t break up because of Ice Cube. And If it weren’t for internal strife they could have ended Cube’s career. Above the Law had him 100 miles and running every time they saw him. But that was 30 years ago. Cube don’t sell records today or make music you can bob your head to.

      1. U sound salty. They absolutely broke up because of him. He told them in No vaseline that they were getting jacked. That song made them look at it and thats what caused this ‘internal strife’ u talking about.

And cube still make music u can bob ur head to… ur just not listening.

    2. No Vaseline is definitely better than this overrated so called diss track of 2Pac. So is Ether.

      1. Shut your dumb ass up! Go back to your dad teaching you everything about the male body and stay off the internet PUSSY 🤭

      2. Didn’t I tell you to shut your dumb ass up?! Your daddy teaching you about males has you talking about bags of dicks. F a g g 🤭

      3. Don’t pretend you don’t like men with your pansy retorts. See you at the gay burlesque show halfwit.

      4. You’re gonna see me at the gay burlesque show? Nope, sounds like you’re gonna be the only one there gay boy 🤭

    3. Yep, it’s up there for sure. You can’t even call Drake & Kendrick back & forth beef. Soft as fuck!

    4. I used to say Hit Em Up is the best diss of all time but Cube is right to be fair, he took on an entire group of giants alone with no help from anyone so I’ll give him that… Outlawz did their thing but Pac didn’t need them on the song…

      1. I disagree, Dj Yella posed no threat, Eazy E didn’t even write his own raps, Dre didnt write his either. The only one who could’ve given Cube a back and forth was MC Ren but Cube had the better writing skills. Ice Cube could say he took on all these people by himself but non of them except for Ren were actual MCs.

    5. I guess it’s not a “diss” but the hardest diss to me is against all odds, Pac was talking (and snitching) about real life dudes who put pressure on him…and still shot at Diddy and Nas too lol. Nothing realer than that.
