Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 5/4/08

    Singer/songwriter Lyfe Jennings makes a solid comeback with his third release, Lyfe Change, debuting at #4 this week with 80,000 copies sold. Lyfe was trumped this week by Madonna‘s debut of Hard Candy (280,000 sold), Mariah Carey, and Leona Lewis, respectively.

    The much anticipated Rising Down album from The Roots debuted at #6 selling just under 54,000 units, while Lil Mama‘s VYP sold 18,600k and landed her the #25 spot on the charts. Following one spot after, Rick Ross takes #26 with Trilla selling 18,300.

    With the help of a guest appearance from Kanye West on the single “American Boy”, U.K. sensation Estelle grabbed the #38 spot for her album Shine which sold 14,700 copies. After making a surprising #5 debut last week, Atmosphere‘s When Life Gives You Lemons… dropped down to #41 with 14,000 sold. Snoop Dogg‘s Ego Trip also takes a large drop from #35 to #65 selling just over 10,000 units this week. The eclectic sounds of Santogold, the M.I.A-esque artist with a major co-sign from Kanye, debuted this week at #74 with her self-titled album selling 9,400 copies. Meanwhile, Lupe Fiasco sits at #96, just 25,000 copies away from going gold on the Soundscan charts (he has already been dubbed RIAA certified gold though).

    After speaking on what many believe to be outlandish conspiracy theories, Prodigy‘s H.N.I.C. dropped from #36 this week to #130 with just over 5,000 copies sold. 9th Wonder and Buckshot‘s The Formula finds them space on the charts at #137 selling 5,800 copies.
