Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 10/28/2012

This was perhaps the biggest week on the charts of 2012. At the top, Taylor Swift went platinum in less than seven days with Red. Only the Country/Pop starlet could steal Kendrick Lamar’s thunder, as the Compton, California’s first major label album, good kid, m.A.A.d. city sold nearly 250,000 units and grabbed the Black Hippy member a coveted #2.

Further down the charts, the latest Wu-Tang Clan off-shoot, a soundtrack to RZA’s new film, made a Top 40 grab with appearances by Clan members, Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa alongside Kool G Rap, Pharoahe Monch and M.O.P.

Independent Hip Hop went strong, as Psychopathic Records released a new solo project from Above The Law’s Cold 187um (a/k/a Big Hutch) after a tumultuous year, scoring him benchmark solo success. Doomtree’s P.O.S. landed a Top 50 in his third Rhymesayers Entertainment solo record, all while battling a kidney condition that pulled the Punk/Poetry-inspired emcee from touring. Jedi Mind Tricks’ Vinnie Paz reached the Top 100 with his sophomore solo album, God Of The Serengeti. Paz linked with production from DJ Premier and The Beatnuts on his latest outing. Lastly, another former Ruthless Records artist (albeit from another era), Stevie Stone rang the Top 200 for the second time this year with his Momentum release on Strange Music.

Kendrick Lamar Takes A Quarter Million People To His m.A.A.d. city

Kendrick Lamar has dominated the Hip Hop media cycle for the last 11 days. Fans and critics have thrown the c-word around (“classic,” that is) regarding his first album through Interscope Records/Aftermath Entertainment. K.Dot’s first major label release, while Shyne and Game got into it regarding their own opinions. Whichever side is taken, the album shines as one of Rap’s premier releases from 2012. Appearances by Compton legends Dr. Dre and MC Eiht are balanced with those by Drake and band/label-mate Jay Rock. Production is split between TDE’s longtime contributors such as Sounwave, THC and Tabu with work offered by Just Blaze, Pharrell, Hit-Boy and even Like of Pac Div. An online smash, “The Recipe” featuring Dre only made the album’s Deluxe version, while “Swimming Pools (Drank)” has gone mainstream in the last month on terrestrial radio.

The success and fanfare of G.K.M.C. also brought 2011’s Section.80 back to the charts. The self-released album deemed the best of last year by the HipHopDX staff went to #129 scanning over 3,000 units last week digitally (including a purchase by a confused Juicy J). That effort has sold just under 80,000 units overall.

After A Difficult Year For Above The Law, Cold 187um Breaks Through

It was a big week for fans of West Coast Hip Hop, and not just TDE. Following the death this summer of KMG, Above The Law has suffered a difficult year. In the middle of a reported lawsuit against Eve, Interscope Records and Ruff Ryders Entertainment regarding “Love Is Blind,” Cold 187um (a/k/a Big Hutch) inked a death with Insane Clown Posse’s Psychopathic Records. Releasing his sixth retail project, The Only Solution is the first time Hutch has a solo record appearing on the Top 200. This particular outing finds the A.T.L. alum and Pomona, California pioneer rhyming over some of his label-mate’s beats, including I.C.P., Twiztid, and Blaze Ya Dead Homie.

This is Hutch’s sixth solo effort, dating back to 1999’s Executive Decisions.

    1. Well done to Kendrick he put out a fire album which got amazing reviews and is selling really well and they haven’t spent loads of money on promotion so whatever he is eating and getting paid unlike MMG who have to pay back all the money the label spent on promo ha ha ha ha Kendrick is another artist to add to the list of rapper who are bigger and better than OFFICER RICKY

      1. Awesome story dude, now maybe Kendrick will make it to the HipHop Cash Kings list like Rick Ross & Wale.

GFID has already been certified Gold by the RIAA so cry us a river and tell us why you mad white boy.

    2. good to see a rapper finally live up to the hype kendrick dropped a classic ita a good two weeks for hiphop because that meek mill album goes hard too i hope people go out and support it as well!

    3. Big ups to Kendrick! Well deserved!

My question is, why did another 12,000 goofs go out and waste money on the 2Chainz album? Unbelievable.

      1. Kendrick will sale about 13,000 next week. His buzz is dead already..He should have released when he had the cosigns and the juice. He needs better production. I am a fan, but the album is collecting dust on my shelf now…

      2. he will sell not sale you fucking retard, stay in school

you think his buzz is already dead? you must be mad cause his buzz is just starting!! he will def sell more than 13k next week

    4. Who is buying 2Chainz records? And what happened to Officer Ricky William? He ain’t going gold this time? Dayum, and that album was pretty solid.

    5. ARE THERE ANY KENDRICK LAMMAR FANS IN NEW YORK OR ANY OTHER STATE BESIDES L.A ?….I NEED SERIOUS RESPONSES PLIZ

      1. Repping BK right here, Bed-Stuy , got the album- has bunch of decent tracks, 4 out 5 would be my grade.

      2. Im in Arkansas and I got it from the local music store. No matter what you haters say. We going out and supporting the homie Kendrick Lamar.

      3. Amsterdam in the building here too, homie had me hyped since OD dropped and had me actually buying an album in a longass time. Don’t let the hype scare u off lol, he actually IS good..

      4. Woooowww……nice to see how many people out of Cali AND the US support Kendrick!! Shout out to all you from out here in LA!

    6. I love the “Rick Ross Flopped, but Kendrick is doing great!” Comments. He’s on BET and he’s major lable backed and gets radio play. Lol yall just retarded.

    7. ANY1 WANNA BET WHEN EMINEM ALBUM COMES OUT HE GONNA SELL A MILLION COPIES FIRST WEEK….OR AT LEAST 900 000.guaranteed

      1. (i’m first anonymous reply) 50 cent is more relevant then my favorite rapper?? Eminem is my favorite rapper of all time and Kendrick is my favorite atm and he sure isn’t more relevant then either of them..

    8. “Where’s Xzibit”

He released it a couple of weeks ago, and it debuted at number 150, so I guess it’s already out of the top 200

    9. HUDDZ TOWN ENGLAND HERE AND WE GOT MA.AD LOVE FOR KENDRICK LAMAR AND EVERYONE AROUND THE WORLD IS PROUD OF HIM AND BLACK HIPPY FOR THERE ACHIEVEMENTS SO THERES YA ANSWER!!!!! KENDRICK MADE IT!!!! HATES KEEP YA HEADS DOWN!!!

      1. Certifications are based on sales to the retailers, not to customers. He already went “Gold” when stores bought enough albums, and they wouldn’t buy albums to sell to customers if no one was buying. Whether he actually sells 500,000 copies to customers or not, he already has his Gold Plaque from the RIAA. That’s how it works.

      2. that plaque is worthless unless 500K buy the album and that hasn’t happened yet. he’s still a couple months away.

    10. OMG GUYS !!!! RICK ROSS IS THE BIGGEST HIP HOP STAR IN THE GAME !!! YEAH I KNOW HE GOT OUTSOLD BY SOME KENDRICK DUDE WHO WAS UNDERGROUND LAST YEAR, BUT AT LEAST HE’S GOLD !!! … HUH ? HE’S NOT GOLD YET ? WELL UH … AT LEAST HE’S ON THE RADIO !!!

    11. “Certifications are based on sales to the retailers, not to customers”

That’s actually right. In some ways that seems like cheating. Everything should be based on cold hard sales figures, not how much someone ships to a store, cause by now, most of Ross’s album are probably collecting dust on a shelf, so it’s misleading to say it’s already gold when in fact it’s not even close.

      1. Again, it’s not “misleading” at all, because what defines “Gold” certification is based primarily on sales to retailers, not to customers. That’s where you guys keep getting yourselfs mixed up. “Platinum” in the United States is 1 million copies sold. “Platinum” in the United Kingdom is 100 k copies sold. No matter how much customers buy, if the retailers buy enough, an artist can get the certification. That’s all that matters.

    12. Where’s Kanye to take Taylor Swift’s sales and give them to Beyonce because she is Beyonce.

I’ll never forget Kanye being the biggest fawkin girl ever that night. Showing his true colors.

    13. You have to be a fool to sign a record contract in today’s climate. Nobody on this list at a major will never recoup with these numbers. too funny.

      1. i disagree

kendrick didnt have a lot of big name producers or features so i’m sure his album didnt cost a whole lot to make

    14. If someone would have told me that Kdot album was gona push 225k I would have told them stop dreaming. I’m shocked that such conscious album was so successful commercially. That interscope/aftermath machine is one hell of a beast. My god lol.

    15. September 12, it was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, for shipments of 500,000 copies in the US.[67] As of October 14, it has sold 438,000 copies in the US.[68]

      1. mtv’s so called hottest rapper in the game! LOL

all those features, all that promotion still cant go gold!

      2. Another 60,000 sales should come by December, January but platinum is a far stretch. i could agree that the press doesn’t equal the end result, but I don’t know how much they spent nor do I know whether the circus that surrounds Rick Ross is enough to keep people paying attention.

    16. kendrick would’ve sold more (maybe 300k), but all you little nerdy backpacker mainstream-hating underground geeks say “album sales dont mean shit” just as an excuse not to BUY the album, yet wayne kanye jayz eminem are all selling good numbers

    17. Congrats to Kendrick, that’s big for him. Bought the album last week and it’s incredible. Might be the best debut this year besides KRIT.

    18. Yo, yall don’t forget about Hurricane Sandy that couldn’t allow people to buy albums for like 2-3 days. Kendrick probably woulda sold more. Watch his second week be strong.

    19. Another thing…straight up, who the FUCK is MACKLEMORE AND LEWIS and how the FUCK are they selling over a 100,000 copies of their album??? WTF???

    20. I bought Kendrick Lamar’s album. Was really waiting for it. I have to agree with Shyne though. The beats are lame, and leaning towards pop music. And what’s with all that singing, in a nasal voice, it’s all over the album? ‘Classic’? More like forgotten in 1 year (but hey, it doesn’t mean I won’t dig his next work).

      1. You’re focused too much on the image. Listen to the lyrics! The beats and the delivery are so diverse on this album; the story-telling is phenomenal. It’s no mistake that GKMC sold 1/4 mil in the first week.

    21. Sometimes I wish we could be put back to our natural states, out in the wild and fighting for our survival. Maybe if we didn’t live in a world where survival is guaranteed then we wouldn’t spend so much time complaining and suffering over trivial matters. Maybe if we were fighting for our survival, protecting our loved ones and ourselves we would appreciate the fact we’re alive and breathing more
and stop being such a bunch of fucking pussies.

We live in a world that is so far fetched compared to what our animal instincts expect, and we’re forced to worry about bullshit like following fashion trends, paying bills and taking care of insurance, registration and every little detail of our cushy easy fucking lives. Many of us are left depressed, insecure, and forced into things like eating disorders, addiction, and we need people like psychiatrists to look after us and our petty ’emotions’.

Instead of hunting and gathering for survival, and enjoying each other’s company like the animals we are, we sit around, discussing news and what has recently happened among celebrities and complaining about our personal issues as if we actually have real problems. We seem to invent our own problems and our own struggles because our lives have become so meaninglessly easy.

Start to remember next time you’re having a tough time, you’re a fucking animal and every time you invent your own problems you are spitting in the face of biology and every ancestor of yours who survived a tougher life than you have. Don’t complicate things and make things harder.
Don’t let the clothes or lifestyle fool you, your basic goals are still very simple:

“Eat, fuck, defend yourself and stay healthy, find shelter, and rest when you can.”

      1. thats exactly what humanity has spent the last 5000+ years getting out of…. one week in that kind of existence and you would be crying for your old life back. another 5000 years and human nature would get us out of it again. what a dummy

    22. Damn where’s NAS Life is Good LP at!?? Hip Hop is still dead and Kendrick is Nice but overhyped! Taylor Swift Out sold all these scrubs that’s a shame! The Game aint the same smh

      1. Unknown Bums??? You have your head in your ass so far to even recognize New and GOOD talent.BTW Stevie Stone is not unknown.Grinding for the top Indie Label Strange Music.Momentum EP = Go hard as hell.

    23. Also not shown, Lupe’s FIL2 is #63, Nas’ Life Is Good @ #174, DMX didn’t make it,

and Eminem still strong with Recovery at #182 & Drake’s Take Care at #138. Nobody probably cares though.

    24. ja rules pil2 out yet?? i thought it was going to be out 2012.. but never see it here on charts so it cant be.. and i read from here that its now certified 6times platinium?? what the fuck, some1 tell me is it out?

when dat shit comes out, yall see some REAL numbers.. not those 3k on first week sales!! fans are hungry ####

    25. I havn’t listened to much Kendrick but from what I have heard I really don’t see the old school hip hop style that people have been raving about but as to the record sales no one can honestly say that’s not from incredible co-signs by Dre… all the features, the big talk, he shut out everyone but Kendrick and honestly Hunger Games Mixtape by Tito Lopez was phenominal for a guy without an album whatever happened to him??

    26. Didnt put Twiztid in the hiphop charts??? They jus dropped a album the same day as Big Hutch aka Cold 187um on the same label that hit #18 on the Top 200. BIG fail DX. Abominationz is a good record with all production pretty much handeled by Seven from Strange Music. Features from ICP, Kaliko, Glasses Malone & Royce Da 5’9.
