The Million Man March is a historical event that is near and dear to hip-hop’s heart. Well, it’s about time to celebrate this occasion’s tenth anniversary in a big way. Hip-hop stars like Kanye West, Biz Markie, Common, Diddy and others are gearing up to celebrate the Millions More Movement.
Considering that many have labeled this “The Hip-Hop Generation”, it is important that many of today’s rap stars take part in this event. In a recent statement, Russell Simmons said, “The time has come for the Hip-Hop community and all of us to come together and participate in a movement which will have a fundamental influence on the lives of this generation and generations to come.”
Common, the Chicago Emcee agrees and adds, “I always looked at hip-hop as a vehicle to educate, to enlighten, to inspire. If we make money at this music game, we can contribute to our communities, create jobs in our communities and really help make a difference. Participating on October 15 will draw much needed attention to these issues.”
Aside from those names already mentioned, underground heavyweights dead prez and ?uestlove of The Roots will also participate.
A few rap stars couldn’t do it alone, though. The NAACP, the Nation of Islam, the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, and various other organizations will take part in putting this event together. Other entertainers like Steve Harvey and Harry Belafonte will be a part of this occasion.
Since the Million Man March was so powerful ten years ago, it’d be great to see hip-hop have it’s own special place engraved in history when talking about this landmark occasion. The Millions More Movement will take place October 14-16 in Washington, D.C.
