“Glee” Creator Says That Series Could Not Afford Rights To Cover Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”

Fox television’s hit series Glee has introduced millions of viewers to various popular songs. Last year, the series cast performed Cee-Lo Green’s hit “Fuck You,” with a guest appearance by actress Gwyneth Patrow, that helped propel the Goodie Mob emcee/singer’s The Lady Killer hit to a smash single.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Glee creator Ryan Murphy revealed that the show had plans to resurrect another anthem by an emcee. Per the interview, Glee attempted to cover Eminem’s 2002 hit “Lose Yourself,” but the legal rights to cover the Aftermath Entertainment gold single would cost $200,000. “We couldn’t do it because the episode would’ve been so over budget,” Murphy said.

Eminem’s Interscope label-mates, The Black Eyed Peas, have been covered on Glee this season. Last December, there were rumors that Em would appear on the show. Those rumors have never been substantiated.

    1. why does it say $200 at the top of the article if you mean $ 200 thousand, you guys blow it everyday on this website

    2. good, keep anything from eminem off this show, dumbasses already managed to butcher the beatles, journey, the doors, the rolling stones, kiss, and queen. Just stick to bubble gum pop music since thats what your auidience listens to anyway.

    3. Damn it is really necessary to pay $200,000 just to sample a song on your show? I mean it is a hit song but everyone knows Eminem wrote it. It’s not like they’ll claim they created the song.

      1. Yes, but I’d want a lot of money if Glee wanted to take my classic song and turn it into a trainwreck on international television.

    4. Its only a matter of time till they do go and spend money on the song(horrible thoughts of a movie for this crap come to mind).

    5. You would think as big as glee is that they be able to spare 200k. I guess all those awards and ratings they get don’t equate to cash.

    6. If Fox had enough money to pay for the rights I sure hope eminem would Refuse, that show is fuckin terrible i wanna punch all of the those people in the face, But back to the subject, Glee Wanted to use a song by The Band “Kings Of Leon” on they’re show, but The Band Refused, and I thought to myself “Good”

    7. Em aint the only one, Guns N Roses told them no to, and when they asked about it, one of them dudes said “Glee is ever worse then the movie Grease…….And Grease was bad enough”

lol, I wouldnt let them fuck my song up either
