Ghostface Killah Calls Drake “Brilliant”

Wu-Tang Clan is one of the most storied groups in Hip Hop history so whenever a new-comer, especially one that isn’t from New York and doesn’t typically have as intricate a rhyming style as the Wu, decides to name a song after one of the Clan’s, it becomes controversial.

That’s exactly what Drake did when he titled a song off of his last solo studio album, Nothing Was The Same, with “Wu-Tang Forever.” Even the Clan was split about how to react to what the Toronto native did.

Recently, before a recent show in Toronto, Ghostface Killah, a long-known supporter of Drake, spoke to members of the Canadian press about the OVO boss.

“Drake is brilliant,” Ghost told members of the press after being asked about the Canadian emcee. “I don’t look at Drake like these other little rhyme guys nowadays, because I think he can really spit a rhyme. So I put him in a different category.”

The Staten Island emcee and Wu member also came to Drake’s defense when it comes to lyricism as many criticized him when he initially dropped the Wu-Tang-referencing track.

“A lot of people might try to play him out … but I’m a lyricist, so once my antennas go up and I hear somebody who sounds really nice on the beat and got a lot of fans and stuff like that … I keep listening to him,” Ghost explained according to Yahoo Music Canada. “He’s just one who caught my ear. He’s really, really doing his thing. I can’t (dump) on him. Nothing bad I can really say about him.”

Inspectah Deck is one member of Wu-Tang Clan who didn’t approve of Drake’s “Wu-Tang Forever” song. He cited the song had little to actually do with the Wu aside from it’s title and opening line. Read more of Ghostface Killah’s related statements here.

    1. why is it so hard for some of you delusional nerds to accept the fact that drake is one of the greatest rappers and the face of rap today? Why is it so hard to accept these facts when numbers prove it? Even your favourite rappers are calling drake one of the greatest. However it is very apparent that this irrelevant bum is sucking up to drake to get a drake feature. We all know drake revives and makes rappers carreers with his features.

      1. why is it so hard for you delusional assholes to realize that sales/popularity doesn’t matter to us “nerds”? The fact that you, your mom, and all your friends are bumping track right now makes it less cool.

      2. Aubrey got his ass whooped by Puff Daddy. So get the fuck out of here with Aubrey being some great rapper, when his little pussy ass got whooped by Puffy.

    2. Probably this old bum wants some attention because he is coming with an album. Well lets drop the name DRAKE and i have attention. Whats next Reakwon saying 2Chainz is a great rapper.

      1. He does. Lets see Ghostface being 23 when “Protect ya neck” came out. Action Bronson being… 10. Ghost stole that shit at 10. Damn. That’s fucked up.

      2. ghost biting from bronson….WTF??? Ghost dropped 13 solo albums and 5-6 WU joints fromm mid-90s.Not to mention being the best from WU…so which is more likely, that Bronson was biting from one of the greatest or that Ghost was biting from the never hear of?? I know BR but is obvious u dont know shit bout Ghost or hip-hop

    3. damn, even all your so called “hip hop legends” are giving props to drake and seeing his brilliance. why can’t y’all just give up and accept it already?

      1. I tried to listen to one of Drake albums got bout halfway thru before I took it out…worst half hour of my life

    4. Ur Drake disses have just been proved irrelevant. Ghostface just proved you don’t know shit about this hiphop shit. Ghostface is an OG of this shit. Supreme Cliemte and Zonly Built for Cuban Linx are indisputable classics. A god in the game and he’s calling all you suckas lames who don’t understand this art form. Drake can spit. Anyone who understands how a true MC handles the mic knows Drake can spit bars. But let’s be real, most “real hiphop” on hiphopdx are white kids from the suburbs who don’t understand 80% of rhymes anyways.

      1. GTFOH. Bought Ironman on the very day it dropped. It’s a classic but not indisputable. Some people do not include it. His best album is “Supreme Clientele” IMO. Ironman is a close second.

    5. “SO CALLED HIP HOP LEGEND’ HOW OLD R U :10 OR 11? GHOST IS ONE OF MY FAVS EVER and he is enttled to his opinion of course, but so am i DRAKE is wack, one of most overrated ever in my opinion.to be honest drake doesnt even make hip hop albums: he makes pop music, not even allowed to mention ghost in same breath..Drake steady losin at checkers while GHOST is chess master!!!

    6. GHOST HAS PLENTY OF ALBUMS DISSING R&B/ COMMERCIAL RAPPERS AND NIGGAS THAT DILUTE THE GAME. NOW, HE IS A FAN OF DRAKE? I BET

      1. Hmmm…. Seems like somebody misunderstands this hiphop shit. Ghostface and RZA are both huge fans of R&B. They sample classic soul and had Mary J Blige assist on some the Wu’s biggest singles. Ghost has a whole album “Ghostdini” with new R&B singers plus plenty of singles sampling from classic soul. When RZA was dissing “Rap and Bullshit” it wasn’t an artist like Drake. Drake may get the “pop” tag but look at a track like say “6 God”. That ain’t conventional pop music. No true hiphop legend with a brain would diss such an obvious talent. Clean your ears. We black people. Black people appreciated good soul music. Drake doesn’t make corny played out R&B or hiphop. He makes innovative R&B music and hiphop. Black people will always appreciate that

      2. ^ Dude, you got it wrong. Drake does make corny played out R&B/hip-hop, there’s nothing innovative about his music. 6God is obviously conventional pop music. You read WAY too much into him and his music.

    7. A brilliant ball shiner. The type that really brings out the shine on that skin flute ass nigga. Yea he can spit…spitshine deez nuts!

    8. And..only built for Cuban linx is technically a Raekwon album but it was heavily shared with ghostface and almost considered a joint album. U boys need to stop studying hiphop and live it. Everyone knows Cuban Linx was heavily shared between Ghost and Rae.

      1. U boys need to stop studying hiphop and live it. What does that even mean in this context? Go to school.

    9. I think Drake is great at making melodies for choruses and he has a witty line every once in a while, but overall he’s not a talented rapper. His lyrics are very simplistic, and all he does is brag about himself or complain about instagram girls and fake friends who did him dirty. His singing is also bad. I wouldn’t call him brilliant for picking good beats and doing catchy hooks. 50 Cent was good at writing good hooks, as well as Chief Keef, and a lot of rappers. That doesn’t make him special. I’m not impressed

      1. Rapper has to have lyrics AND flow. You are ignoring flow. Great MCs have great flow . Drake has the best flow in the game right now, I’d argue. Jay-Z used to have it but Drake out did him. As far as lyrics go, one part is so-called “complexity”. The other part is impact and hooks. If you go for complexity, you often lose hooks and people don’t remember what you said. What Drake says sticks with listeners. That’s why they can’t get Motto or Started from the Bottom out of their head. It’s similar to Jay-Z. They are both the Yogi Berras of hiphop. They got quotables that just sting and stay with you. People can easily recite a whole Beastie boys record but what about say like Del the funkee homosapien who loved crazy lyrical complexity ? He is good but no real hooks. NaS probably has the greatest balance between complexity and hooks .

      2. Wrong. Drake’s flow isn’t that good and his hooks suck. The Motto and SFTB are garbage songs. Catchiness is not always a good thing, especially when the song is ass. Complex lyrics aren’t forgotten either. Drake’s quoteables don’t have staying power.

    10. I actually believed Ghostface bc i’m a big Wu Tang clan fan. I downloaded drakes “if your reading this” and I must say I am very disappointed.

Album is straight trash, the beats are super simple and elementary. The flow is almost always the same. Lyrics are like “meh”. The album has maybe 3-4 good songs the rest is straight trash.

I can’t believe i fell for it. I also can’t believe Pitchfork gave drake a 8.3 and they gave Lupe Tetsuo and Youth a 7.1…
      Unbelievable

      1. now that I think about it, DMX was right! He does sound like a wash-machine cycle just goin on and on and on and its annoying.

      2. This is the core problem with folks who hate on Drake. Drake’s strength comes through upon repeated listens. One listen or even two is never enough assess his music. You have to listen 5 or 6 times. I’ve plenty of boys who listen to Drake at first and say its trash and then, I force to keep listening and they are suddenly huge fans. There is more complexity to Drake than what appears on the surface. I’ve hated almost all Drake albums upon first listen and thought he was falling off but then I realized I was wrong after multiple listens. His strength is hooks and word-play lyricism that seems simple at first but you don’t realize the crazy hooks and complex rhymes until repeat listens. A lot of albums you can listen to once or twice and it sounds great and then, after a month you can’t even listen to it again. Drake is the opposite. Ages like wine

      3. Nah, fuck that repeated listen shit. If a record doesn’t catch you on first listen, it failed overall. That story about your boys is obviously bullshit. There’s no complexity in Drake’s music, it’s just the same simple shit. His hooks are repetitive and his wordplay isn’t that impressive or complex, especially when he repeats the same words or phrases over and over and stretches out syllables uneccessarily. That’s not creative, that’s lazy. His music doesn’t get better with time, it’s the opposite.

      4. Not lying dude. Your prob from a different era but Innovative music requires repeated listens. Look at how many Drake songs have no chorus or do not have the typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure. No trained musician/producer can scoff at such weird arrangements. That alone makes him hella innovative. I remember friends of mine dismissed “midnight mauraders” when they first heard it. I mean, these were all big Tribe fans. Rolling Stone even gave the album a 2 star review. Can u believe it? Ol dirty bastards “36 chambers” was also first dismissed by many big Wu-tang fans back in the day upon first listen. It sounded too new / even simple at first. People would say the piano keys are too simple/out of tune. Anyways, I prob will not convince you but repeated listens increases appreciation for Drake and you hear things you didn’t hear the first time. A record is a lot to absorb. This generation expects instant gratification. It wasn’t like that when the hiphop pioneers started. Plenty were laughed at and dissed for taking risks . Drake is no different. And it’s no bullshit. I have plenty of friends who are hardcore hiphop heads who love like Schooly D to Rakim who at first, said Drake was fucking awful but then, listened more and love it now. Think what u want

      5. Yeah, you are lying. A lot of rap songs don’t have choruses and don’t have the same verse-chorus-verse-chrous structure. There’s nothing new or innovative about that, it’s all been done before by better rappers. That shit you said about Tribe and Wu-Tang are contradictory lies. Repeated listens won’t make people appreciate a record better and it won’t make any of Drake’s records better. Nobody laughed at or dissed rappers who took risks, Drake is nothing like them. Enough with the bullshit. You don’t have any friends who are hardcore rap fans and if you do, they would never be Drake fans after being forced to listen to him again and again. Basically, you’re full of shit.

      6. Leave the insults aside guys. I listened through it 3 times already. Drake reminds me of some southern artist back in the early 2000’s. Simple beats with repeated rhymes that might sound cool and become catchy.

Dont get me wrong Drake got some nice Commercial songs from his first albums but this album doesnt make any artistic statements. I like the song “energy” just bc its simple beat and catchy hook cuz of the repetitiveness, and Track number 12 and 16 I believe.

It’s just plain and boring to me. Especially the beats, its very elementary. You really dont need a lot of skills to make beats like that. Maybe that’s why the flow and the lyrics were subpar on a lot of the songs.

This is challenging to read and redundant and hard to read and repedative.
