Following the release of Big Sean’s “Control” and the now notorious Kendrick Lamar verse that came with the song, numerous emcees were quick to respond to K-Dot’s verse whether they were mentioned on the song or not.
Among the first to release their response track was Brooklyn lyricist Joell Ortiz with “Outta Control.” While Ortiz may have been quick to let loose his record, another Brooklyn emcee carefully considered a lyrical response to Kendrick’s “Control” verse, but opted against it.
While speaking with Vlad TV, Fabolous commented on the verse and the “mixed feelings” that came with it. Rather than fire back with a record of his own, the rapper instead did a little research on Kendrick’s bars and even chopped it up with a few OG’s in regards to the song.
“You know I had mixed feelings. At first I thought it was—something that he shouldn’t have said,” Fab revealed. “You have to address it, but after speaking to some of the OG’s and getting some research behind it and figuring it out, I had more of an understanding of it. On the surface, everybody just was in shock…The king of New York was a little shaky, but like I said I got a little research behind it. I heard it was Kurupt’s line before his…I almost jumped the gun. I’m not gon’ lie. I kinda felt it out. An OG also told me that if you do, do it on your time when it works for you.”
Fabolous later went on to speak on the surplus of “Control” responses turning “into an attention thing” and becoming almost circus-like.
“Sometimes I feel like it turns into an attention thing,” he explained. “Like ‘Alright, this is the big talk of Hip Hop right now. Let me jump on it.’ You know what I’m saying? So, it got a little tainted to me. So, that was also a reason in my decision. And it was a few things that slowed me down.”
Released earlier in the month, “Control” features guest verses from Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica and garnered quick attention thanks to a Kendrick verse which called out Drake, J. Cole, Wale and a handful of other emcees. The No I.D.-produced record will not be featured on Big Sean’s upcoming Hall Of Fame LP.
While Big Sean’s sophomore effort is set for release on August 27, Fabolous is currently at work completing his next album, Loso’s Way 2. After numerous delays, it’s still unclear when the project will be released.
