Eminem Speaks to “60 Minutes” About Rhyming, Sobriety and More

As we reported last week, CBS’ 60 Minutes ran an episode featuring Eminem this Sunday, October 10. The episode included a segment of the emcee interviewed by Anderson Cooper about a variety of subjects including his come up, rhyming, addiction and sobriety. 

Noting that while he dropped out of ninth grade, he was always good with the English language, Em spoke on how he views his rhyme style. 

“People say that the word orange doesn’t rhyme with anything and that kind of pisses me off because I can think of a lot of things that rhyme with orange,” he noted, before rhyming about putting an “orange, four-inch, door-hinge in storage.” 

He added that this love of rhyme was an escape for him, allowing his confidence to grow.

“This kid over here, he may have more chicks or he may have better clothes or whatever but he can’t do this like me. He can’t write what I’m writing right now.”

Race is never a subject far from the discussion when Em is being interviewed and it was part of this feature as well.

“There was certainly a rebellious youthful rage … in me … and the no-getting-away-from fact that I am white and this is predominantly black music and people [are] telling me, ‘You don’t belong and you’re not gonna succeed because you’re this color,’ ” Em said. “Then you want to show those people that you can and you will.”
