Eminem participated in a town hall style question and answer session mediated by Shade 45.
During the session, Eminem spoke about his “Love Game” collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, the only guest rapper on The Marshall Mathers LP 2, which was released today.
“I got a chance to chop it up with [Kendrick Lamar] in Detroit,” Eminem said. “He’s a really cool dude, super humble and super cool. I liked him as a person. The fact that he’s on Aftermath, we’re on the same label, it just made sense. I’m super grateful that he did it. He killed it.”
The song may have surprised some fans, which is something Eminem said he anticipated.
“I don’t think people would expect us to be on a record like this,” Em said. “I think it’s got a unique sound.”
Eminem said he had other ideas for their collaboration, but this one seemed the best for their duet.
“One of the things I told him when we got together was, I said, ‘I laid a couple of ideas down and I can play you some of them, but this one I’m geared towards more, because the other verses that I have laid are kind of rappity-rap,'” Em said. “I have so much of that on my album. I feel like this one [‘Love Game’] might be a better direction to go, just conceptually.”
During the session, Eminem also praised Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse.
“One of the things that’s so great about that verse was he did it in a way that you really can’t get mad at him because that’s what every emcee should be thinking,” Eminem said, according to mtv.com. “At least every emcee that competitively raps and he does competitive rap. As an emcee, you should already be thinking that. So he only said what every other rapper’s already thinking. The fact that he had the balls to say it is what’s incredible to me.”
Eminem also provided his own list of favorite emcees. LL Cool J, Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane and Naughty By Nature’s Treach made the list, according to mtv.com.
During the town hall, Eminem also spoke about controversy surrounding his lyrics.
“I’m in this game to press buttons and spark conversation and to get a reaction out of people,” Em said. “I want to say the lines that are going to get people’s attention. And I would rather have…bad attention than no attention at all. I think it’s cool if my records spark conversation and debate.”
