Eminem Admits He Had To ‘Relearn’ To Rap Following Near-Fatal Drug Overdose

Eminem has been candid about his struggles with drug addiction. After a near-fatal overdose in 2007, the Detroit-bred “rap god” eventually pulled himself together and got on the road to recovery. But according to a recent conversation with SiriusXM host Gray Rizzy, he had an incredibly difficult time getting back into top form.

While discussing the Music To Be Murdered By: Side B song “Zeus” — in which he apologizes to Rihanna for a leaked verse referencing the infamous Chris Brown assault — he claimed to have “zero recollection” of penning the verse, explaining he was just rapping whatever rhymed because he was learning how to rap again.

“Like the rhyme schemes didn’t even sound like familiar to me,” he said. “So I was caught off guard too. I was like, ‘What the fuck, I said that?’ I said it and I was wrong for saying that. It was fucking stupid. You know, a lot of times, especially with the Relapse record, when I first started learning how to rap again, because of the drug situation that I went through and having to relearn a lot of things, that was one of those things that it was like, ‘Well, if it rhyme, say it.'”

Slim Shady wrote the song for his 2009 album Relapse, but the verse in question ended up getting scraped. The song then leaked online in November 2019 and found Shady rapping, “Of course I side with Chris Brown/I’d beat a bitch down too/If she gave my dick an itch, now.”

He remains remorseful to this day, telling Rizzy, “I should have thought better of it. You know, it was one of those things that, like I said, I don’t even remember recording, but record a lot of songs. So it was like, it’s, it’s tough sometimes.”

Like Shady has done numerous times in the past, he used music to issue an apology to Rihanna on the aforementioned “Zeus.”

“But, me, long as I re-promise to be honest,” he raps. “And wholeheartedly, apologies, Rihanna/For that song that leaked, I’m sorry, Ri/It wasn’t meant to cause you grief/Regardless, it was wrong of me.”

Rihanna and Eminem have teamed up on several songs over the years, including the 2010 smash hit “Love The Way You Lie,” 2012’s “Numb” and 2013’s “Monster.” Their collaborative relationship morphed into a full-fledged tour in 2014.

      1. You don’t understand writing music, so I’ll help your punk ass. He said he was just rhyming to rhyme but if you know anything about writing music, he’s always been more complex than that. I haven’t listened to eminem since the fucking early 2000’s, but it takes an idiot to not notice how complex his compound rhymes and complex rhyme schemes are. Seriously, go look at some of his verses in lyric form. He’ll rhyme words at the start or within a bar and at the start or within another. Compound rhymes. The way he structures his words at the end of bars, rhyme schemes, is also complex. Real talk, nobody really writes as complex as he does. The only person I’ve seen come close is kendrick lamar. This is not opinion, this is fact. His pen game AND freestyle off dome game is unreachable. If rapping was the painting world, he would most arguably be da vinci. He has practiced his craft while others treat it like a joke. Lil wayne (while good) has bred a bunch of no writing, wack rappers after his heavy lean stint.

        1. K yea I read like half of your essay but you fucking proved my point cheech. No fucking shit he writes “complex” raps with multi syllabic rhyme schemes intertwined within the bar and times it with the snare and all that….but that’s literally just rhyming for the sake of rhyming. Granted, yes, this is rhyming to the tenth degree, and undoubtedly requires talent and absolute precision. But that’s all it is. Rhyming for the sake of rhyming.

          1. By your logic, you’re describing all of hip hop. You’re on a hip hop site, which means you obviously like hip hop so you make no fucking sense describing the whole of hip hop as just rhyming for the sake of rhyming. Sit the fuck down, kid.

            1. Nah fammo. Sometimes it’s about making quality music with replay value. Come on Philospher! Gtfoh with your ice cold takes.

    1. This lie resembles his “African-American girlfriend” lie from back in the day. You have to be a fool to believe what he says. And he can’t just rap anymore; using drug overdose as an excuse for weak bars.

    2. Line was heavy … he really shouldn’t apologize especially if RiRi still drools for the woman-beater …

    3. Eminem taking responsibility is so important, that’s something an African-American or Latino in the hood can’t do, they rather hide or use excuses.

As for “learning to rap”, thank you Eminem, you still dominate the game, no black rapper can outrap you, flow, delivery, cadence, multiple syllables and compound rhymes, great and captivating beats, you still the greatest, better than them actually because you don’t even need hip hop music to exist, your music charts in countries that do not even speak English, 30 of them MusicToBeMurderedBy-SideB was number one.
      Sorry Rhee.

      1. I think you mean wack beat selection.
He doesn`t need hiphop music to exist?
You rambeled alot of stupid stuff right there.
And i`m white and don`t f with his music..

      2. You dont help Em talking all that bullshit… Ive been a real Stan, i even have an original copy of The Slim Shady EP, and every deluxe version, etcetcetc. But lets be clear, he doesnt sound good anymore, his flow and voice are monotonous, he should have retired long time ago, now he’s just staining his career and its really sad for me to see that.

      3. Khlelle, damn you’re gullible. Lol Eminem didn’t take responsibility at all. He blamed drugs for saying he’d beat women just like Chris Brown. He’s doing it to save his own ass because of cancel culture. How can u NOT see that? Instead you kiss his woman hating ass like a moron.

        1. Drugs? Yeah he took drugs because he had so much shit on him. You don’t know what he has been through.
          1. He’s been bullied
          2. His mother abused him
          3. He had a toxic relationship.
          4. He failed school.
          5. He was poor and lived with his mom and daugther in a trailer park.
          6. His best friend died.
          7. His father abandonded him and his mother.
@Em is a bi tch most people like you and I have probably only experience one or two of these things. Not 6. He had so much shit on his chest. He did drugs to forget about stuff in life. That is why most teenagers and young adults do drugs

    4. Eminem’s whole shtick in the beginning was to say shocking things and go against anything PC. Funny how he’s only apologizing to Rihanna. It’s obviously because of her skin color. I don’t hear him apologizing to the other numerous white women he insulted and got into petty beefs with over the years. He should start by explaining why he wanted to kill his white ex-wife and write all those pathetic rap versus about his obsession with getting even with her. She deserves the biggest apology because he got rich off that. Nope. Instead he apologized to gay ass Elton John and Rhianna for obvious reasons since he’s a woke puppet now.

    5. That’s a good excuse lol. Imma use that sudden case of amnesia excuse when I cheat on my girl. “Oh my gosh I forgot I was in a relationship!” Lol trying to jack something at the store: “I did that? I forgot how to pay that’s all. You see, I OD’d a while back. My bad”.
