Ebro Darden has denied backtracking while adding more context to his viral comments surrounding Drake‘s lack of social activism.

The music executive and radio personality jabbed Drake during a recent episode of Apple Music’s Rap Life Review for shading Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” as part of his It’s All A Blur Tour stage setup, claiming the 6 God hasn’t shown up to speak out on Black issues throughout his career.

While Ebro explained that Drake doesn’t have to speak up in his music, he didn’t appreciate Drizzy taking shots at Donald Glover’s 2018 anthem when the song actually had a message and social justice impact.

“Drake doesn’t have to,” Darden clarified on Twitter on Monday (July 17). “Nor should he if he doesn’t feel it. But to say ‘This is America’ is overrated and over awarded when that song came at a time when people needed someone to say something. And he doesn’t feel the need to. That’s all.”

Responding to one Twitter user who agreed with his take, Ebro added: “I was responding to Drake saying ‘This is America’ is overrated and over-awarded. That song made people feel something at an important moment. And to slam that song when you never say anything is wack to me.”

In another tweet, Ebro wrote: “Watch the full clip on Youtube… Drake doesn’t have to say shit. But if we talking about ‘This is America’ then he rarely says anything significant about social issues and Gambino did.”

The original conversation was surrounding Drake dissing Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” on tour amid their icy relationship. Co-host Nadeska Alexis even alleged their issues stemmed from fighting over the same R&B singer.

“Drake, who has never shown up, and y’all know I’m the biggest Drake fan on this show,” Ebro said. “Drake has never shown up to have anything to say about anything going on in society with Black folks or anything other than himself.

“So now you have an issue — I get you have an issue with Childish Gambino if what you’re saying is face — but fam, the song was supposed to be a joke diss, it didn’t actually happen. So why you in your feelings?”

Earlier this year, Childish Gambino admitted the Grammy-winning 2018 anthem started out as a playful Drake diss before turning it into “This Is America.”

“I had the idea three years before,” Glover explained. “I told [director] Hiro [Murai] the idea, and he’s like, ‘I really want to do that.’ The idea for the song started as a joke. To be completely honest, ‘This is America’ — that was all we had was that line.”

“It started as a Drake diss, to be honest, as like a funny way of doing it. But then I was like, this shit sounds kind of hard though. So I was like, let me play with it.”

Being as petty as Drake is, he didn’t forget and added a headline taking a shot at Gambino and “This Is America” to the stage of his It’s All A Blur Tour setup while performing his “Headlines” smash.

“The Overrated And Over Awarded Hit Song ‘This Is America’ Was Originally A Drake Diss Record,” the ticker read.
