DX News Bits: “Ma Dukes” Yancey, Kanye West, Lady Gaga

In a recent video clip, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey discussed the significance of J Dilla’s posthumous album Jay Stay Paid [click to read], as well as her appreciation for Pete Rock [click to read].

Moved by her son’s records, she stated, “‘Jay Stay Paidis a jewel, another gem on the Dilla crown; that’s how I put it. It’s a culmination of feelings for me. When you get used to listening to Dilla tracks, you take something from each track if you really listen.”

Thankful for Pete Rock’s contributions, Ma Dukes explained, “With Pete at the head of this project, that’s the closest thing to Dilla himself.” Ms. Yancey added, “They have this relationship, mentally, and they feel a lot of the same things as far as the way they put their music together, and the way they thought about things…I feel like it’s a gift back to Dilla, because he felt so much of the same soul and fusion in the music as Pete. For all the work that he did, this is to say, ‘hats off to you Dilla.’” Jay Stay Paid is in stores now.
