DX EXCLUSIVE: Pharrell Rocks Southern Cali Crowd for Free Show

Recently, MySpace and Pharrell Williams joined forces to put together an exclusive party in Los Angeles and DX was there to catch all the excitement.

Limited to less than 400 people, the show was meant to introduce fans to the new Skateboard P joints, but also to help the ever popular MySpace craze grow. In the massive flood of Ice Creams and BBC shirts, the stars rose from the back of the stage and lit up an L.A. rooftop for a memorable night.

An evening with Pharrell quickly became an evening with the stars. The showman began his set with Can I Have It Like That?. Backed by a live band and all, fans immediately went crazy as he entered the stage.

    The energy didn’t stop there.

After Eye F*cking the ladies in the crowd, he Stopped Frontin’ and brought out the reinforcements.

Sure, Jay didn’t arrive for his verse on Frontin’ but Lupe Fiasco entered the stage to a roaring applause from the surprised crowd. After a nice rendition of Kick, Push, the duo went into the new I Gotcha, which was embraced by the crowd of bobbin’ heads.

As Lupe walked off stage, the crowd was left wondering What could come next? Gun shots rang through the speakers and The Clipse emerged rocking Bapes, BBC shorts and Lacoste Polo T-Shirts for the hot evening. Poised for a come-back of sorts, the two Clipse pushed through hits like Grindin’, What Happened to that Boy and Hot Damn before showcasing the new Mr. Me Too as the crowd sang along in approval.

Sadly Slim Thug, the next surprise performer of the evening, didn’t bring too much energy. He performed a track off P’s new LP Keep it Playa and I Ain’t Heard of That, but the crowd seemed to die down a bit as his set came to an end.

That quickly changed once Ludacris hit the stage for Southern Hospitality. Even VIPs threw bows to that one. He and Pharrell went on to perform the brand new Money Maker as Luda’s iced out African medallion blinded the attendees. The floor vibrated as the set closed out for Cris.

From one star to another, Snoop freshly walked onto the stage after the crowd practically begged for the Doggfather to perform. He went on to spit his lines, smooth as ever. The two were backed by the live band as they hit tracks such as Beautiful, Drop It Like It’s Hot and That Girl, which is a new track off P’s In My Mind.

Another surprise guest? Pharrell prematurely asked T.I. to hit the stage, only no one told him The King had left the building. In a small moment of awkwardness, the crowd was left wondering why T.I. wouldn’t come out. Always thinking fast, Snoop grabbed the mic and stole the show with charisma and comedy. He went on to joke about his age and claimed no one could add him as their MySpace friend until they smoked weed.

With that, Snoop decided to do his own G-Mix of Number One. Sadly, Kanye West didn’t make it to the stage, but with Snoop on the mic, Pharrell wasn’t worried. Once ‘Ye’s parts came up, the Big Snoop Dogg simply free styled for the crowd, keeping the rhyme on-topic and in sync with the track. Of course this drew some “oohs” from the hometown crowd as Snoop and Pharrell closed the show.

For a mandatory encore, P and the band went on to perform Show You How To Hustle off In My Mind. Such a great show could have ended better, but it didn’t take away from the overall party.

The few people who attended witnessed something spectacular. The rapidly evolving MySpace family and the creative mind of Pharrell managed to pull off an evening with the stars and mixed with the Hollywood rooftop environment, it was worth the long lines and the long wait for concert goers. (Not only to get in, but also the long wait for the delayed album.)

Pharrell’s In My Mind will finally be released next Tuesday.
