Dr. Dre’s brand of headphones, Monster Cable’s Beats By Dre, have received some very high-profile product placement, from talk shows to music videos (Keri Hilson’s and Lady Gaga’s, just to name a few).
Now, some of sport’s biggest stars will be rocking the high-end headphones, as the entire Cleveland Cavalier team was given custom-made Beats By Dre gear.
According to ESPN.com, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Lebron James also teamed up with the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant to purchase custom-made Beats By Dre for every member of the East and West NBA All-Star teams. James also gave the headphones to his U.S. Olympic teammates in 2008.
“I had high expectations,” said Kevin Lee, Vice President of Brand and Business Development for Monster, of the headphones. “We surpassed my expectations. We released the Beats by Dre in 2008, and it took a good 12 months for it to hit the masses.”
Lee spoke of the line’s futristic and visually appealing side, but also noted their audio quality. “They give you full studio sound, because Dre is very particular about sound. It really does matter for athletes. That’s why LeBron and Kobe rock our headphones.”
“Athletes have always used music for some type of inspiration,” said Ryan Grant, Green Bay Packers running back and owner of Beats By Dre headphones . “We travel and do things that are active when we listen to music. We want the best product.”
Indeed, headphones are a worthwhile investment for athletes, according to Atlanta Hawks forward Al Horfor, who had a pair of blue and white custom-made Beats By Dre headphones with the phrase “El Jefe” (The Boss) inscribed on the side made for him and his teammates.
Other athletes who’ve had custom headphones made for themeselves include Chad Ochocinco and Nate Robinson.

They’re good headphones, but they’re definitely over priced. You can get just as good studio monitor headphones from Guitar Center for $75 less. At least they aren’t as big of a rip off as Skull Candy headphones. Those things are awful and ridiculously over priced.

The Studio ones have broken 3 time in the same place.
And the cables to the Tour ones don’t seem to do what they should. Stay one piece and I’m on my second pair

REAL TALK: These “headphones” are actually studio powered monitors. They do deliver a good amplified sound. But I will agree with everybody else complaint that it’s a bit over-priced. But then again these headphones were designed as monitors for studio production, not simply casual use. Usually monitors do run along the Beats by Dr. Dre price range if not more.
WHAT I DONT LIKE: These headphones, as everybody know, are powered by 2 AAA batteries. And depending on how much you use these headhones, wont last more than a week. Because of that battery compartment, the ear cup rattles if played too loud. This can be very irritating.
Anyone with enough sense would think that a pair of headphone that cost as much as Beats by Dr. Dre Headphones would be made ALOT sturdier, and not made from near flimsy plastic. Because when extending these headphones to place on your head, one must be VERY careful not to over-extend the crown. It WILL CRACK. It did on me. I hate that these headphones weren’t made with a more solid design, especially the ear cups! Had these headphones been made with stronger and insulated material (especially in the ear cups), these headphones would probably produce an even more stable & superior sound. But because it isn’t, all sound escapes from the ear cups and EVERYONE can hear what you’re listening to. It is also one main reason why the ear cup where the batteries go will rattle.
WHAT I DO LIKE: When you purchase these headphones I strongly advise you to register them on the Monster web site to claim the year warranty. As long as your headphones are under that year warranty, if you call Monster Support you can ask for any part replacement pieces and they will deliver free of charge. It’s an alternative to sending in your headphones for repairs and you feel funny about parting with them through the mail.
