In celebration of Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” music video reaching a staggering 100 million YouTube views, the video’s choreographer Sherrie Silver has shared a step-by-step tutorial for the choreography.
“As promised, when we hit 100 million views, I promised I’d drop the tutorial,” Silver says at the start of the video. (As of last check, the video had passed 128 million and was still rapidly rising).
In the nearly seven-minute video, the 23-year-old Silver provides tutorials on the South African Gwara Gwara, another dance originating in the Ivory Coast, and several other moves.
Silver previously spoke with Glamour magazine about her work on the much-discussed video.
Given that several dances in the “This Is America” visual are of African origin, Silver spoke on the importance of highlighting their history as she teaches them.
“As I said, I don’t believe in just teaching a dance. I believe in teaching where it comes from as well,” she explained.

Why would you highlight the choreographer, when the video itself is saying how people are distracted by the pop culture and dancing, to notice what’s actually going on in the world? How dense can you be??
oh no, you missed part of it too, we are being shown/given african history/world history….
Pop culture is corporate culture, it watered down enough for people with no culture to feel comfortable and usally the whack version of whatever African people create.. Culture Vultures create pop culture. Its usually dominated by money, sex and drama. Pop culture is soulless… HipHop is not Pop cultures it’s to honest, potent and it’s operates on to night of a frequency for corporate people to vibe to so they created rap and mixed it with corporate culture and that’s most of what you like… We don’t fuck with that on the real side…..
Shut up you finger tenting pontificating jerkoff. Ever seen a movie when its popular? Thats pop culture and unfortunately for your shit opinion Hip Hop is one of the most mainstream aspects of pop culture. If more of you “Hip Hop” heads would contribute instead of trying to wax poetic about shit you dont know about maybe that wack ass music you like would be relevant.
