DJ Quik is in mourning after getting news that a woman who helped raise him as a child has passed away, and he’s thanked her for protecting him and his brother from the “danger” of their neighborhood.

Quik, who was born and raised in Compton, California, took a moment to honor “Mrs. Morales and The Morales Family,” after her granddaughter posted a photo of the family standing alongside a young DJ Quik.

“Mrs Morales and The Morales Family. I want to Thank you for believing in me as a child and, knowing that with all of the danger in our neighborhood, you knew I was a good one!” he wrote.

“Thank you for protecting my brother, Perry, and for motivating us to work hard to be successful like your family is. My condolences to the Morales family for the departure of your matriarch. Love You All.”

While it’s unclear exactly who Mrs. Morales was to the legendary DJ, she had many reasons to be proud as Quik’s catalog needs to introduction. Having worked with some of music’s best including JAY-Z, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Kurupt and many others, Quik’s career is nothing to scoff at.

However, he acknowledged last December that his career has never quite hit the heights of his West Coast contemporary Dr. Dre. Considering how many legends he’s worked with over the years, it seems unfair, he said.

“I know it’s early. But I deserve to be where Dre is,” he declared on Twitter at the time. “I don’t think it’s fair, but I understand why. I’ve never had a machine behind me, that always hurt my friends more than it did me.”

In other news, Quik is getting ready to release his forthcoming 10th album, and previewed the project with lead single “Class” back in March. The album — the name of which has not been released — will reportedly be Quik’s last.
